Volleyball Drops Final Match at Art Carmichael Inviational 3-0 to Canisius

KINGSTON, R.I. – The Hartford volleyball team dropped its final match at the Art Carmichael Invitational on Saturday in three sets (25-18, 25-21, 30-28) to the Canisius Golden Griffins. Hartford (3-8 overall) was led by the combination of the Nethersole sisters who finished with 27 total kills.

Elder sister Kami Nethersole led all hitters in the match with 14 kills, while younger sibling Sareeta Nethersole chipped in 13. Canisius' Emily Elek led the Golden Griffins with 12 kills, round out the double digit attackers in the match. As a team, the Hawks combined for a .235 hitting percentage (43 kills, 16 errors, 115 total attacks) with (Sareeta) Nethersole  led the team with a .387 average with one errors in 31 total attacks. Elek led all hitters in the match with no errors in 22 total attacks for a .545 average.

(Kami) Nethersole combined for a .265 hitting average with five errors in 34 total attacks, while Dionna Kirton and Kathryn Gawrych also hit well, each chipping in four kills. Kirton finished with one error in 10 attacks for a .300 average, while Gawrych was errorless in 14 attacks for a .286 average. Sophomore setter Jackie Tamburri led the team with 21 assists, while rookie Lindsey Compton finished with nine assists, a career-high.

Defensively, (Sareeta) Nethersole led the Hawks with 10 digs, while Tamburri added eight and Kirton seven. The Hawks also finished with three total blocks, with junior Lindsay Anderson involved in all three.

Anderson opened the match with a kill to put the first point of the day on the Hawks side, before opening up a 4-0 advantage on a kill from (Kami) Nethersole and a pair of errors for Canisius. The Hawks would hold that lead until the first tie of the contest at 11-11 on a kill from Logan Sulongga, the second point in what turned out to be an 11 point run that gave the Golden Griffiths a 20-12 advantage they wouldn't give up.

In the second set, the Hawks again opened well, this time taking the first three points for an early 3-0 advantage. Canisius would manage the first of three ties at 4-4. Following another tie at 5-5, the Hawks rattled off a four-point scurry to take their largest lead of 9-5. Hartford held that lead until a 14 all tie came off a service ace from Elek, during whose serve the Golden Griffiths took their first and only lead of the contest on a kill from Samantha Good and a second ace for Elek.

The final set was the most hotly contested with 20 total ties and 10 lead changes before all was said and done. This time around, the Golden Griffins opened up the set by taking an early 2-0 advantage. Through the early points, neither team would hold more than a three-point advantage until a string of point trading that stretched 17 total points and lead to a 27-27 tie. Canisius was able to gain a final advantage after a 28-28 tie with a Hawks error and a kill from Roxanne Hernandez closing out the match.

Hartford will play a single mid-week game on Tuesday, September 11 when they travel to Holy Cross for a 7:00 p.m. start against the Crusaders.
