Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – Freshman Corinne Horanzy led Hartford with a career-high 17 kills and a .400 hitting average as the University of Hartford volleyball team dropped a four-set (25-22, 22-25, 21-25, 21-25) decision at UMBC on Friday night. The Hawks close out a four-game road stretch with a Sunday afternoon match up at Stony Brook (1 p.m.).
Joining Horanzy in leading Hartford was junior Sareeta Nethersole who finished with 13 kills, the only other Hawk in double figures. Horanzy's .400 hitting average was second best for the Hawks as senior middle blocker Lindsay Anderson led the way with a .412 average connecting on nine kills in 17 kills with a pair of errors. As a team, Hartford finished the match hitting .216 overall with 54 total kills and 21 errors in 153 attempts.
Defensively, four Hartford players finished with double figures led by senior Dionna Kirton who finished with 14 digs. Nethersole and setter Jackie Tamburri each finished with a double double with Nethersole chipping in 12 digs and Tamburri adding 13 digs to 47 assists. Rounding out the defensive leaders was libero Paola Llerandi who finished with a dozen digs. Anderson led Hartford's blocking efforts as she finished with four block assists with the Hawks totaling five stuffs. Tamburri and Nethersole each added two blocks.
Hartford trailed UMBC by as much as four points in the opening set before using a four point rally, which included kills from Nethersole, Maya Louis and Kirton to take its first lead of the match at 14-12. UMBC would regain a lead before the Hawks went ahead for good using a series of six-of-seven points to gain a 24-20 advantage and set point. A kill from Nethersole closed out the opening set in favo of the Hawks 25-22.
The Retrievers held the lead from the beginning of the second set through the midway point with Hartford managing a pair of stalemates before taking its first lead at 17-15 thanks to a four-point rally. Kills from Nethersole and Horanzy, along with a pair of UMBC errors made up the Hawks run. Following a 19-19 tie, UMBC took control and used back-to-back kills to even the match at one set apiece with a 25-22 final in the second set.
The third set featured three ties and a pair of lead changes with the Retrievers opening up their largest lead of the match at 22-15 on a kill from Emily Witsaman. The Hawks would use a three point rally to pull within four, but the Retrievers would hold on and take a 2-1 advantage in the match with a 25-21 final.
The final set proved to be the closest of the night with 14 total ties and six lead changes, the most in either category. After UMBC opened the match scoring the first three points, the Hawks rallied for their first lead of the set at 5-4, scoring four-straight points A pair of UMBC attack errors and a kills from Anderson and Horanzy led the Hawks in that rally.
Hartford used a kill from Anderson and back-to-back errors on the Retrievers to take a 14-12 lead before the Retrievers regained an advantage using a three-point run. UMBC would hold that lead, despite a pair of ties. The Hawks looked to make a rally late in the match, using three straight points before the Retrievers were able to close out the match with an ace and a Hartford error, taking the final set 25-21.Â
