Simms' Late Goal Leads Hartford Past CCSU, 2-1

Box Score NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Freshman Jeff Tryon and sophomore Javoni Simms each found the back of the net on Wednesday night to lead the University of Hartford men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over neighboring rival Central Connecticut on the CCSU campus. Winners of four of their last five matches, the Hawks carry a 7-1-2 record into America East Conference play, which starts at home against No. 7 UMBC on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Leading by one goal at the half, the Hawks' advantage did not last long as the Blue Devils (3-5-1) picked up momentum out of the break, tying up the game on a breakaway by Freddy Metellus in the 46th minute. Despite the goal, Hartford did not let its guard down, firing three shots on goal before netting the game-winner in the match's 85th minute.

Offense was generated early and often for the Hawks. Launching three shots before the nine minute mark, Anthony Santaga provided an early look for his squad, rifling a screamer off the goal post.

Going the next 23 minutes without a shot attempt, Tryon reversed that trend and broke through the Blue Devils' back line. In the 33rd minute, the rookie scored on a chip pass from senior Anthony Santaga, beating Central Connecticut keeper Josef Abele with a hard blast to the right.

That Hartford tally put a halt to Central Connecticut's streak of shutout soccer, a rally that spanned more than four games and lasted just over 400 minutes.

Following the quick tally just 36 seconds after halftime, Central Connecticut kept on attacking the Hawks' zone, but came up empty on its final six attempts. David MacKinnon, Hartford's freshman keeper, stopped all three shots during that final stretch to finish with four saves on the night.

The Hawks also had their share of looks in the second half as they blasted three shots within a 23 second span into the Blue Devils' zone. Santaga started the rally with a blast that Abele was able to stop but not secure. On the rebound, senior David Bernhardsson continued the rally, but his attempt was headed away by the Blue Devils' defense. The series continued with another shot off the boot of Santaga, one that was wide of the mark.

The match remained tied until the 86th minute when Tryon set up Simms with a pass from the right wing. Simms connected, chipping a shot into the upper right quadrant of the net out of reach of Abele.

Both teams finished with 11 shots while Hartford held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Central Connecticut was whistled seven times for offsides, while the Hawks were called off just once.
