Volleyball Tops Providence in Four Sets, Kirton Leads Hawks with 16 Kills

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford volleyball team erased a late four-point deficit in the fourth set to take a 3-1 victory over the Providence College Friars on Sunday afternoon at the Reich Family Pavilion. Hartford was led by senior Dionna Kirton who led all hitters in the match with 16 kills, while junior Sareeta Nethersole added 15.

As a team, Hartford finished the match hitting .274, the second highest team hitting average in conference play. The Hawks finished the match with 60 total kills, the second most n 2013 for Hartford, three shy of the season-high of 63 against Eastern Michigan on August 30. Leading the Hawks in hitting percentage was Maya Louis who finished with eight kills and two errors in 16 attempts for a .375 average. Kirton was just behind her with a .342 average with three errors in 38 attempts.

Rounding out the Hawks offensive leaders was Corinne Horanzy who finished with 10 kills and Lindsay Anderson who added nine. Jackie Tamburri, the Hawks setter, finished with 49 assists, also the most for her since the Eastern Michigan match when she totaled 50.

Tamburri also led all the Hawks defensively with 20 digs, her second match of the season with 20 or more. The double double for Tamburri is her team-leading 13th of the season, while she was one of three players to finish with a double double. Nethersole and Kirton also doubled up on digs with 18 and 11, respectively. Rounding out the digs leaders was libero Paola Llerandi who finished with 18.

The Hawks also combined for 10 blocks, just the second time this season the Hawks have had double figure blocks. Leading the way for Hartford was Anderson who finished with five total blocks on four block assists and a solo block. Kirton also added four total blocks on three block assists and a solo block.

After trailing by three early in the opening set, the Hawks came back to tie the game at seven on a pair of Providence hitting errors and a kill from Kirton. The Hawks would then tie the game at each of the next three points before either team could open up an advantage of more than one point.

Following seven straight ties, 11 total for the set, the Friars took a 22-19 point advantage on a kill from Annie Russian and a Hawks hitting error. Following a timeout by Hartford, the home team rallied with three-straight kills from Kirton to tie the score at 22.

After Hartford tied the set again at 23, the Friars benefited by a Hawks serving error and a hitting error on Nethersole to take the early 1-0 lead in the match. Kirton led all hitters in the opening set with eight kills and a .583 hitting percentage with just one error in 12 attempts.

Hartford first lead of the afternoon came early in the second set thanks to a kill from Anderson that provided a 2-1 advantage. Providence answered that deficit by scoring four straight points on an ace and kills from Lindsay Witt, Mackenzie Ziegler and Jordan Weisler.  The Hawks then rallied to tie the score at five on three straight Friar errors.

Following an 8-8 tie, the Hawks regained the advantage, building a 12-9 lead before the Friars were forced to call a timeout. Included in the Hawks rally was the 10th kill of the match for Kirton, who was the first player into double figures.

Hartford used a 5-0 run to gain its largest lead of the match at 20-13 Included in the run was kills from Horanzy and Louis as well as a service ace from Nethersole. Another kill from Louis would match that advantage at 21-14, before the Friars chipped into the lead cutting it to 21-18.

After trading the next eight points, the Hawks evened up the match at 1-1 with a three-point rally to end the set with a 25-19 lead. Kills from Nethersole and Anderson provided Hartford with set point before a Providence error closed out the set in favor of the Hawks. Louis led the Hawks in the second set with four kills, while Nethersole and Anderson each added three.

After ties in the first two points of the third set, Hartford gained a 7-3 advantage courtesy of three straight errors against the Friars, one serving miscue and a pair of hitting faults. The Hawks then extended that lead to 12-7 on back-to-back kills form Nethersole and Anderson.

Hartford wouldn't relinquish the lead the remainder of the third set, despite Providence runs that cut the Hawks lead to three. Providence would cut the Hawks lead to two, 23-21 before a Friars error provided set point. Kirton would close out the set with a commanding kill, her 12h of the match.

Hartford built up a three-point advantage on three occasions in the fourth set, the last of which was a 10-7 lead thanks to a kill from Horanzy. The Friars then rallied to take six of the next seven points for the first lead change of the set. That run ended with Providence holding a 13-11 advantage.

The Friars would hold extend that lead to as much as 22-18 before the Hawks began a 6-0 run that resulted in the second lead change of the set and a 24-22 Hawks lead. Despite Providence breaking up that run, the Hawks used a kill from Nethersole to close out the match with a 25-23 victory in the fourth set.

The Hawks will host New Hampshire and UMass Lowell in their next two matches with the Wildcats first on the docket. Hartford and UNH are scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 1.
