WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford volleyball team fell in league play to the University of New Hampshire, dropping a three-set match at the Reich Family Pavilion on Friday evening. The Hawks (9-16, 3-6 America East) returns to action on Sunday afternoon when they play host to the Binghamton Bearcats at 1 p.m.
A trio of Hawks finished with 10 kills as seniors
Sareeta Nethersole and
Lindsay Anderson and junior
Maya Louis paced the attack. Committing just two errors in 17 attempts, Anderson hit at a .471 clip while Louis, who also had just a pair of miscues, calculated a .444 hit percentage on the evening. Setter
Jackie Tamburri, a junior, handed out 35 assists, including 14 in a back-and-forth opening set.
Improving to 7-2 in conference play and 13-12 overall, New Hampshire's offense was led by a 16-kill effort from Tori Forrest. As a team, the Wildcats hit .324 and combined for 22 errors in the three-set match.
Set one proved to be a battle featuring four lead changes and 12 ties paced by five kills from Anderson and four from Nethersole. Tied at 12-12, the Hawks took off on a 6-1 run to build their largest lead of the stanza at 18-13. The Wildcats clawed back, though, knotting up the match at 21-all.
Following six more ties, New Hampshire clinched the set, taking advantage of a Hawk error and a service ace to score the 28-26 win.
The Wildcats kept their momentum going in set two, scoring eight of the first 10 points to grab the early advantage. Hitting at a clip of .457, the visiting squad never looked back, taking the set by a 25-15 count. Louis and Nethersole each tallied three kills.
In what proved to be the final set, the first 16 points were exchanged by Hartford and New Hampshire resulting in an 8-8 tie. From there, New Hampshire reeled off a 5-2 run to grab a three point advantage at 13-10. That run was quickly halted, though, as the Hawks made it a one-point set on a Nethersole kill and a double block that featured sophomore
Chandler Goodwin and Louis.
The set remained close down the stretch with the Wildcats never pushing ahead by more than four points. Down 20-16, the Hawks rallied for three-straight points, again making it a one-point game and forcing New Hampshire to call for timeout.
Out of the break, the Hawks continued to keep pace. However, with the score in favor of New Hampshire at 22-21, the visiting squad scored three consecutive points to seal the final set at 25-21.
Defensively, senior
Dionna Kirton finished with 15 digs to lead all players while Nethersole had 11. Louis totaled three block assists to lead the Hawks in that category.
