Volleyball Cruises to Three-Set Win Over UMass Lowell

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Led by 11 kills from junior Sareeta Nethersole and 31 assists from classmate Jackie Tamburri, the University of Hartford volleyball team coasted to a three-set win over the visiting UMass Lowell River Hawks on Sunday afternoon. With the win, Hartford (10-16) has posted the most league victories since 1999 at 4-6.

UMass Lowell drops to 0-22 overall with a 0-10 mark in the conference. Brooke Peterson had six kills to lead the River Hawks, who were held to a .058 hitting percentage by the Hawks' defense.

As a team, Hartford hit .303, compiling 38 kills in 89 attempts. Tamburri also led her team's defensive effort, coming up with 10 digs. The Hawks combined to outscore their opponents, 75-48, in the three-set match.

A .379 hitting percentage paced the Hawks to a six-point victory over the River Hawks in the opening set. Led by four kills in six attempts from sophomore Chandler Goodwin, Hartford smacked 14 kills in 29 attempts.

Five-straight points with Dionna Kirton on the serve pushed Hartford ahead, 5-1. That lead grew to 11-5 for the home team before UMass Lowell clawed back, using a 7-2 run to come within a single point (13-12) of the Hawks. Down the stretch, the Hawks took care of business, limiting the River Hawks to just seven more points and putting the set away with a 4-1 run.

In the second set, Hartford broke away from a 13-13 tie by netting 10 of the 12 points, including seven-straight, to take a 23-15 advantage. Back-to-back kills from Nethersole and Lindsay Swan closed out the match to put the Hawks ahead in the match at 2-0. Nethersole paced Hartford with a four-kill effort while Elima Ahi had three to pace UMass Lowell.

Hartford faced a 10-7 deficit in the final set, but ended the match on a tear. Scoring seven-straight points, the Hawks took a 14-10 advantage over the River Hawks and they never looked back. Scoring the final eight points of the set, the Hawks cruised to a 25-13 win.  

The next two matches will be on the road for Hartford as it travels to Binghamton on Friday, November 8 (7 p.m.) and heads to Albany for a 2 p.m. matchup on Sunday, November 10.
