WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford tennis teams returned to the courts Saturday with the men hosting St. Francis (PA) at the East Hartford Tennis Club and the women travelling to take on conference foe Albany. The Hawk men earned a pair of singles victories, but came up short against the Red Flashes, 5-2. The women also dropped their match, 6-1, to the Great Danes.
In Albany, the women's team dropped a 6-1 decision to America East rival University at Albany.
Freshman
Colleen Beck took five games in her singles match. Playing from the No. 3 post, Beck dropped a 6-3, 6-2 match to Albany's Mireille Hermans. Senior
Katina Zampas took four games in two sets, dropping a 6-2, 6-2 decision in the top singles spot.
Hartford scored its lone point by default in the No. 6 singles match.
For the men, senior Josh Isaacson outlasted St. Francis' Juan Pardo to earn a singles victory at the No. 4 slot. Isaacson picked up a 6-4 victory in the first set to take the early lead before Pardo broke back with a 6-4 victory of his own in the second to force a tie-break. Isaacson, a senior from Marietta Ga., won the marathon tie-break, 12-10, to take the match. Isaacson leads the Hawks with four singles wins this season.
Fellow senior Bogdan Nedelcu also took the win at the No. 6 singles position. Nedelcu breezed by Matthew Jerjevich for a 6-2, 6-0 win.
In the No. 2 singles match, senior Marco Neves jumped out to an early lead with a 7-6 win in the first set, but Andres Rosa took the second set, 6-4, and the tie-break, 10-8, to earn a point for the Red Flashes.
The Red Flashes also earned the doubles point, taking two out of the three matches. Freshman Luis Montes and junior Alex Holdstein managed to win their match at No. 3 doubles by an 8-2 score.
Both Hartford squads are back in action March 21 when they head to Andover, Mass., to take on Merrimack College.
