Women's Tennis Tops Wagner, 6-1, to Close Weekend

BOX SCORE vs. HOFSTRA | at RHODE ISLAND | vs. WAGNER

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.—The University of Hartford women's tennis team put capped off a stretch of three matches in four days with a 6-1 win at home over the Wagner Seahawks. Hartford picked up wins in the top-five singles matches to cruise past Wagner Sunday afternoon to go 1-2 over the three matches.

The Hawks started their stretch with a 7-0 loss at home to Hofstra before falling at Rhode Island, 7-0, on Friday evening. The women turned it around Sunday to end the weekend with the victory over Wagner.

Against Wagner Sunday, the Hawks picked up the first point with a pair of doubles wins. The senior duo of Ashley Harel and Katina Zampas prevailed in the top doubles match, taking an 8-6 victory. Freshmen Madeline Makings and Emily Sneddon solidified the doubles point with an 8-3 win at the No. 2 position.

"The doubles point was a large confidence boost for us," Head Coach Torr Terranova said following the match. "Once we won that point, the team relaxed a little bit and it allowed us to approach singles in a positive way."

Entering singles play with a one-point cushion, the Hawks reeled off wins in the Nos. 1-5 singles matches to earn their first team victory of the spring.

Harel got things started in the No. 1 match, posting a 6-1, 6-3 victory over her Seahawks opponent. Sneddon turned in a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 and Zampas coasted to a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3.

In the Nos. 4 and 5 matchups, both Hawks blanked their opponents in the first sets on their way to straight-set triumphs. At No. 4, Makings earned a 6-0, 6-3 win while sophomore Hannah Goldman recorded a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5.

Freshman Felicia Demarco had her best result of the season against Wagner Sunday, taking four games in a close first set at No. 6 before dropping a 6-4, 6-1 decision.

The Hartford women are back in action Tuesday, April 8 when they head to Fairfield, Conn., for a 2 p.m. match against Sacred Heart.
