Box Score 3 NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Senior outside hitter Sareeta Nethersole highlighted the Hawks Iona Tournament appearance by recording her 1,000th career kills in the Hawks second match of the weekend against Iona. The University of Hartford volleyball team finished the weekend with a 2-1 overall record defeating La Salle (16-25, 26-24, 25-17, 25-16) and Bryant (25-19, 25-16, 24-26, 25-23)in four sets and falling to the host Gaels in three sets (17-25, 21-25, 22-25).
In addition to Nethersole's milestone, she led Hawks overall hitting efforts with 42 kills and a.233 hitting average, while also leading the defense with 61 total digs. She and classmate Jackie Tamburri were named to the All-Tournament team, the second-straight weekend the duo has been honored. Tamburri finished the Iona tournament with 114 assists, averaging 10.36 per-set.
Nethersole finished two of the three matches at Iona with a team-high in kills, compiling 13 against Iona and a weekend-high of 18 in the final match against Bryant. Sophomore Corinne Horanzy led Hartford in its opening match against La Salle, smashing 13 total, one of four Hawks to record double digit kills against the Explorers.
WEEKEND HIGHLIGHTS
· With her 11th kill against Iona senior Sareeta Nethersole broke the 1,000 kill milestone, joining her sister Kami as the only sibling pair in school history to surpass 1,000 career kills. Nethersole now sets her eyes on the top-five all-time since the start of rally scoring, needing 71 to take over the fifth spot from Kelly McEathron (2000-03).
· Nethersole not only led the Hawks offensive efforts with 42 total kills, averaging 3.82 per-set, the Cortland Manor, N.Y. native led the defensive efforts wth 61 digs, including two matches with 20-plus digs, setting a weekend-high for all players with 25 against Bryant.
· Senior setter Jackie Tamburri finished all three matches with a double double, giving her nine total for her career. Tamburri collected a weekend-high in assists and digs in the opening match against La Salle with 46 assists and 24 digs. Over the three matches, the floor marshal averaged 10.36 assists-per-set.
· Nethersole and Tamburri were each name to the Iona All-Tournament Team, the second-straight weekend the pair has been honored.
· For the weekend, the Hawks finished with 16 total blocks, sending back six blocks twice against La Salle and Bryant. Leading the Hawks blocking efforts was freshman Katy Henchy who finished with nine total, two solo blocks and seven block assists.
· As a team, the Hawks tied their season-high with eight service aces in the final match of the weekend against Bryant. In that match alone, Tamburri and Nethersole led the team with three aces. For the weekend, Hartford finished with 18 total aces led by Nethersole who dropped six serves in for points.
MACTH BREAKDOWN
VERSUS LA SALLE
· Sophomore Corinne Horanzy led the Hawks in the opening match with 13 kills, one of four players to record double digit kills. Among the leading hitters, junior Chandler Goodwin led the team with a .292 hitting average with 11 kills and four errors in 24 attempts.
· As a team, the Hawks out hit La Salle, finishing with an overall hitting average of .244 with 55 total kills. Hartford's best hitting came in the third set when it combined for 17 kills and one error in 36 attempts for a .444 average. The 17 kills in the third set tied for the match-high with the Hawks also putting down 17 in the fourth set.
· Defensively, three players amassed 20-plus digs, led by setter Jackie Tamburri who sent back 24 of the Explorers attacks. In addition to her 24 digs, Tamburri led the team with 46 assists, her first of three matches with double digit assists and digs.
· The Hawks also combined for six total blocks, tied for the weekend-high, led by freshman Katy Henchy who was a part of four total blocks. Goodwin and Kathryn Gawrych each stopped three of the Explorers attempts.
VERSUS IONA
· As a team, Hartford hit .158 with 22 total kills. Individually Sareeta Nethersole led the team with 13 kills, her seventh-straight match with double figure kills. She also finished the match with a .417 hitting average with just three errors in 24 attempts.
· Nethersole also led the Hawks defensive efforts with 15 digs, joined in double figures by Tamburri who finished with 10 to go along with 28 assists for her second double double of the weekend.
· Also among the hitting leaders was Horanzy who finished with eight and Gawrych who added six, while hitting just one error in 14 attempts.
VERSUS BRYANT
· Nethersole led the Hawks for the second-straight match, collecting 18 kills against the Bulldogs.
· Joining Nethersole in leading the team was Horanzy who finished with 12 kills and did not hit an error in 34 total attempts.
· As a team, The Hawks outhit their opponent for the second time over the weekend, finishing with a .152 average with 51 kills and 24 errors in 178 total attacks. The Hawks best hitting came in the opening set when they put down 13 kills and finished with an average of .227.
· Nethersole and Tamburri finished the Bryant match with 20-plus digs for the second time over the weekend, led by Nethersole who finished with a weekend-high 25.
· Overall, the Hawks combined for six blocks for the second time over the weekend, led by Goodwin who finished with three.
· The Hawks also collected eight points all on service aces, tying the team season-high, led by Tamburri and Nethersole who each finished with three.
