STONY BROOK, N.Y.— The University of Hartford men's and women's tennis teams fell to the Stony Brook Seawolves Friday afternoon. The Hawk men fell by a 5-2 score as the women were shut out 7-0. The men's two match points are the most recorded points against the conference rival since 2003.
The Hawk men's first match victory came in the number five spot as freshman Alexander Romaine defeated Stony Brook junior Vinicius Degani. Romaine dominated the first set beating his opponent, 6-1, before falling in the second set tie-breaker 5-7. In the super tie breaker third set, Romaine battled closely with Degani prevailing with a 10-8 match set point.
Sophomore Morgan White followed Romaine with back-to-back Hawk victories in the number six singles spot defeating sophomore Brandon Stone of Stony Brook. White won the first set 6-2 before falling to Stone in the second set by a five point differential, 1-6. In the super tie breaker third set, White outscored his opponent 10-7 for the match set win.
Junior Nicholas Sharwarko played a tough fourth single position match against Stony Brook sophomore Kenzo Kauffmann forcing a third set super tie breaker. Sharwarko led the first set 6-4 before falling 5-7 in the second set to Kauffmann. Despite scoring 11 points in the first two sets, Sharwarko dropped the tie breaker set by a 12-10 margin.
In doubles play, Romaine and Ryan Lugtu gave the Hawks their best chance at a doubles point. The duo competed against sophomore duo Tyler Hoffman and Brandon Stone of Stony Brook falling in the tie-breaker set 7-5.
In the women's game, freshman Skyler Schaar gave the Hawks the best chance during play to record a match point. In the number three singles spot, Schaar forced a tie-breaker first set to Stony Brook freshman Elizabeth Tsvetkov, 7-5 before being shut out in the second set, 6-0.
In doubles play, Schaar teamed up with fellow freshman Katherine Long in the first singles spot. The duo battled against Stony Brook junior Louise Badoche and sophomore Nadia Smergut, but lost by a 6-4 margin.
The Hawks will travel to Hamilton, NY on Saturday March 7 to take on the Colgate Raiders. The men are expected to start at 10 a.m. with the women following at 2 p.m.
