Women’s Tennis Splits Weekend, Defeats Wagner 4-3 on Sunday

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford women's tennis team split a pair of weekend matches, dropping a Friday afternoon decision at Hofstra 7-0 before posting a 4-3 victory over the Wagner Seahawks on Sunday in Staten Island. Leading the Hawks victor on Sunday was freshman Meredith Heitland and junior Hannah Goldman with the upperclassman securing the victory at sixth singles.

The Hawks opened the match earning the doubles point with victories at second and third doubles. Heitland and partner Emily Sneddon made quick work of their second doubles opponent, Jenna Harris and Carolyn Gibson, winning 8-2 to give Hartford the advantage. After the doubles point was evened at one win a piece, the Hawks battled hard at first doubles forcing a tie-breaker. Katherine Long and Skyler Schaar played with incredible intensity in the tie break, winning back-to-back points by Schaar to secure the victory and the first point of the match.

Hartford then took a 2-0 advantage in the match thanks to a win at third singles by Schaar, defeating Madison Pautsch 6-2, 7-6 (10-8). After falling in the next two singles matches at first and second singled, the Hawks sealed the victory with Heitland winning at fourth singles and Goldman earning a sixth singles victory.

Heitland won her match in three sets with the momentum swinging back-and-forth with every other game. She then took a lead in the first set and never looked back, winning the point 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Goldman's victory at sixth singles is her first victory of the season, while she clinched the match for Hartford. Goldman outmatched her opponent, Carolyn Gibson, cruising to the victory 6-4, 6-2.

Against the Pride on Friday, the Hawks battled through tough conditions throughout the match with Hartford putting up a fight at fifth and sixth singles. Sophomore Madeline Makings battled back to force a third-set tie breaker in her fifth single match, falling 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5). Goldman also forced a third-set tie breaker, cruising to a 6-1 victory in the opening set before dropping the second set 7-5 and the tie breaker 1-0 (10-7).
