THE LEAD:Alex Saharek delivered an RBI single, but a seven-run first inning lifted Green Bay to a 9-1 victory over the Hartford softball team on Sunday in the final game of the opening weekend of the team's Spring Trip to Clearwater.
Elizabeth Newkirk and
Marisa Ferguson also delivered hits for the Hawks, with Ferguson scoring the team's lone run. Abby Brinkmeier went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI in the game for Green Bay.
Three UWGB pitchers combined to scatter three hits in a shutout performance, striking out three. Katie Rossman collected the win in relief, while
Kelsey Bird was carded with the loss for the Hawks.
HOW THEY SCORED:• UWGB netted seven runs, four earned, on three hits in the opening frame to take a decisive lead.
• The Phoenix added two more runs in the third on a Brinkmeier double and a sacrifice fly.
• Hartford plated its only run in the bottom of the fourth, as Ferguson used her legs to get to third on a stolen base and a throwing error, then Saharek singled her home.
