Stony Brook Sweeps Softball in Doubleheader

THE BASICS:

GAME 1 RESULT: Stony Brook 9, Hartford 1

THE LEAD:

Stony Brook used big innings in each game to propel itself to a doubleheader sweep of the Hartford softball team on Sunday afternoon. A pair of five-run innings, one in each game, proved the difference for the Seawolves, who improved to 6-2 in league action.
 
In the circle, Stony Brook limited the Hawks to four hits over the two games, with Peyton Fisher providing two of those hits for Hartford.

GAME 1: STONY BROOK 9, HARTFORD 1 (6)
Diane Caruso and Irene Rivera combined for five RBI to lead the Seawolves to a 9-1 victory in game one. Sawyer Fried delivered an RBI single for the Hawks in a losing effort.
 
Jane Sallen picked up the victory for the Seawolves by allowing three hits and two walks in five innings of work. Sallen struck out five, while Maddy Neales collected the save with a perfect inning. Lexi Wilkerson was carded with the loss for the Hawks.

HOW THEY SCORED, GAME 1:
• SBU cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the first, with a two-run homer off the bat of Caruso.
• The Hawks threatened in both the first and the second, getting runners at the corners in the first and a runner on second in the second, but were unable to plate a run.
• The Seawolves made it a 3-0 lead with an RBI double from Kim Ragazzo in the fourth.
• The Hawks got on the board in the top of the fifth with Marisa Ferguson drawing a walk, moving to second on a groundout and coming in to score on Fried's RBI single to right center.
• SBU added an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 4-1 advantage.
• The Seawolves finished off the game with five runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth to close the scoring.

GAME 2: STONY BROOK 9, HARTFORD 1
A five-run second lifted the Seawolves to victory in the afternoon, with Lexie Shue posting a 4-for-4 day and Alexandra Pisciotta adding a 3-for-4 contest with two RBI.
 
Fisher had the lone hit for the Hawks, as Neales struck out eight and walked three in improving to 5-5 on the season. Bianca Ross was credited with the loss.
 
HOW THEY SCORED, GAME 2:
• Stony Brook struck first in a big way, plating five runs, three earned, on five hits and an error in the bottom of the second.
• Hartford got a run back in the top of the third, when Jenice Aloyo brought home Fried on an RBI groundout to make it 5-1.
• Rivera hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 6-1 lead, and the Seawolves added a second run in the frame on a double steal to make it 7-1.
• Stony Brook finished off the scoring with an RBI walk and an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to walk off with the win.
