THE LEAD:
Hartford earned a come-from-behind victory in game one and followed that up with a resounding win in game two to sweep a doubleheader with Army West Point on Saturday. The Hawks moved to 30-13 on the season and are just one win shy of matching the school record for victories in a single season.
T.J. Ward went 5-for-5 in the doubleheader, and
Kyle Gauthier pitched five no-hit innings in game two, facing the minimum number of batters in the win.
GAME 1: HARTFORD 4, ARMY WEST POINT 3
Aaron Wilson went 3-for-4 and Ward went 2-for-2 as the Hawks came from behind for a 4-3 victory over the Black Knights in game one.
John Mormile pitched three strong innings out of the bullpen to earn the win and improve to 3-0.
Mormile allowed just two hits and one run in his three innings of work, while
Brian Murphy allowed six hits and two walks in his five innings of action. Justin French was carded with the loss after surrendering two hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings for the Black Knights.
HOW THEY SCORED, GAME 1:
• Army struck first, plating two runs on a two-out single in the top of the second to garner a 2-0 lead.
• It remained that way until the bottom of the fifth, when the Hawks cracked the scoreboard against Matt Ball. Wilson delivered a one-out double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scampered home on
Chris DelDebbio's sac fly.
• In the bottom of the sixth,
Ben Bengtson reached on an error and later came in on a Ward single through the left side.
• Army pushed back ahead in the top of the eighth with a two-out RBI single.
• The Hawks plated two unearned runs on errors in the bottom of the eighth to take a 4-3 victory.
GAME 2: HARTFORD 14, ARMY WEST POINT 4
The Hawks delivered a seven-run bottom of the fifth and the pitching staff did not allow a hit until the eighth inning as Hartford delivered a lopsided victory in game two. Ward went 3-for-3 and the Hawks put up 19 hits in the victory.
Gauthier allowed only one base runner – a hit batsman in the first that was later retired on a double play – and struck out three in needing just 52 pitches to go five innings. The senior improved to 5-2 on the season and picked up his 14
th career win.
Joe Roberti went 3-for-5 with three RBI in the victory as well for Hartford.

HOW THEY SCORED, GAME 2:
• Hartford came out swinging in the first, as two errors and a balk scored the first run, then an RBI double by Bengtson and RBI singles from Ward and Roberti gave the Hawks a fast 4-0 lead.
• Bengtson pushed the lead to 5-0 with a sacrifice fly in the second.
• Gauthier cruised on the other side, allowing only the second batter of the game to reach base, and had thrown just 52 pitches through his five innings of work.
• The Hawks exploded for a seven-run, seven-hit, 24-minute bottom of the fifth. The first six batters reached in the frame, with
Erik Ostberg delivering an RBI double,
Ashton Bardzell driving in two runs on a double and Roberti adding another RBI single to make it 9-0.
• After
Sebastian DiMauro added a run on a sac fly, DelDebbio contributed his second hit of the inning, a two-run double to left center, to push the lead to 12-0 through five.
• Roberti added another RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, his third of the game, to make it 13-0.
•
Joe Shashaty delivered his first career hit, an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh that scored Ostberg, to plate the 14
th run of the game.
• Relievers
John LaRossa and
Seth Pinkerton kept the no-hitter in tact until the top of the eighth. Army tacked on a single run in the eighth and three in the ninth off
Justin Robarge to result in the final score.
