Balanced Offensive Performance Propels Hawks Past Stony Brook

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Hartford 73, Stony Brook 64
RECORDS: Hartford (14-10, 7-3 AE); Stony Brook (8-16, 3-7 AE)
LOCATION: Island Federal Credit Union Arena (Stony Brook, N.Y.)

THE LEAD:

A balanced offensive performance propelled the University of Hartford men's basketball team past Stony Brook, 73-64, inside of Island Federal Credit Union Arena on Saturday night.

Led by junior Jason Dunne's 20 points, all but one of the nine Hawks that saw action against the Seawolves contributed to the Hawks 73-point total while Stony Brook's Akwasi Yeboah led all scorers with 23 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After a quiet opening couple of minutes for both squads, a layup from senior Hassan Attia ignited a 12-2 run that stretched over the next four minutes and gave the Hawks an early lead. The Seawolves spent the next 10 minutes chipping away at the Hawks' lead before a UC Iroegbu three with 3:45 remaining in the half knotted the game up at 21.
  • A traditional three-point play from junior Andrew Ramirez that put the Hawks up by three with 3:20 remaining was quickly answered moments later by a Yeboah. Dunne drained a triple of his own and broke the 24-24 deadlock seconds later, but that was also quickly rebutted by another Iroegbu triple to draw Stony Brook even at 27 with 2:10 left in the half.
  • Junior George Blagojevic's layup, and ensuing free throw with 40 seconds left in the first half reclaimed the lead for Hartford at 30-27.
  • Stony Brook came within one point in the opening 90 seconds of the second half, but a commanding 10-0 Hartford run provided some breathing room — a 43-31 lead — with 15 minutes remaining. Despite a late push by the Seawolves, the Hawks maintained the lead for the remainder of the game, giving them the 73-64 decision.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS & NOTES:
  • Hartford held the advantage from the free-throw line, hitting 17 free throws (68 percent) to Stony Brook's 11, while also holding a slight edge from behind the arc with eight triples to the Seawolves seven.
  • Stony Brook held the advantage on the boards (42-39).
  • Redshirt-Junior John P. Carroll recorded his third double-double of the season and 21st double-figure scoring game of the season. Pulling down 11 rebounds, he also surpassed 750 career points on his career with 12 points.
  • Dunne's 20-point performance was his seventh of the season and 14th of his career.
  • The win marked the first time since 2007-08 that Hartford wins three-straight America East games on the road. The victory is also the first time in program history that the Hawks reel off three consecutive conference wins in the same week.
  • Head Coach John Gallagher earned his 101st victory in the decision, making him the winningest Division I coach in program history.
  • With the win, the Hawks ended an 11-game skid against Stony Brook.
