Gambel Leads Hartford in NEIGA D3 Championship

BREWSTER, MA. — The University of Hartford men's golf team battled to a third-place finish at the two-day NEIGA D3 Championship after finishing day one in a tie for seventh placeFour Hawks finished in the top 20 throughout the tournament. There were 20 teams in this tournament, counting Hartford.

Austin Gambel advanced 29 spots to finish tied for fifth. Gambel shot a tournament-low 150 for Hartford with a pair of eagles and two birdies the entire tournament.
 
Manny Romero finished with an eight over 152, converting a single birdie throughout the tournament. He also had a streak of five consecutive pars from holes 10 to 14. Michael Amari finished the tournament at nine over and tied for fourteenth place with four birdies.
 
Conor Byrne tied for 19th place 10-over 154. He had five birdies, three in the first round and two in the second. Byrne led the Hawks with the five birdies. Bryce Zimmerman tied for 47th place, carding his best round in the second round with 79. He finished with a final score of 161, with two birdies going over-17.
 
 
In addition, from Husson and Endicott, other schools that participated in the tournament included Bates, Roger Williams, Babson, Eastern Connecticut State, Salem State, Suffolk, Nichols, Springfield, Western New England, University of New England, Worcester State, Keene State, University of Southern Maine, Wentworth, Elms, Western Connecticut State, and St. Joseph's (Maine). Husson University got the highest score of 603. Endicott College came in second, just ahead of Hartford, by one point.
 
DAY ONE HIGHLIGHTS & NOTES
  • Manny Romero leads the Hawks, tying for 16th place with a score of 77. He finished the first round with two birdies, going over five.
  • Michael Amari went six over 78 and carded two consecutive birdies at the 13th and the 14th hole.
  • Austin Gambel and Conor Byrne finish off the top three for the Hawks as they tie for 34th place. The two went 79 and went seven over. Gambel had one birdie, while Byrne had three.

The Hawks continue their fall season at the Commonwealth Coast Conference for a two-day competition on October 19- 20.
