POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The University of Hartford women's lacrosse team came up short on the road on Saturday falling to Vassar College by a 21-9 margin.
Rapid Recap:
- The Brewers jumped ahead early getting the first goal just a minute and two seconds into play. Senior Meghan Smith (Orange, Conn.) gave the Hawks the lead scoring twice in a row to give the visitors the 2-1 lead. Vassar would dominate the final 10 minutes scoring five times to take a 6-2 lead into the second.
- The Brewers continued to stay on the attack jumping the lead to 10-2, before Smith netted another pair of strikes to cut the lead to 10-4. Sophomore Laurel McIntosh (West Kingston, R.I.) added another goal for the Hawks at the 5:56 mark of the second as the lead was cut to just five for Vassar. Smith would find the back of the cage yet again to trim the lead to 10-6, but the Brewers would score the final four goals of the half to lead 14-6 into the break.
- After the 15th goal found the net for the Brewers, Hartford would score yet again as junior Kelly Hoxie (Nassau, N.Y.) scored on a feed from sophomore Talei Ricketson (Centennial, Colo.). McIntosh added her second goal of the day to follow things up as the Hawks trailed 15-8 with 6:21 to play in the third. Vassar would score the final two goals of the period as the lead was 17-8 headed into the final 15 minutes.
- The Brewers would control the fourth quarter scoring four consecutive points over 14 minutes of game time. Smith would register a final goal with 37 seconds as Vassar picked up the 21-9 win.
Inside The Numbers:
- Smith scored six times for the Hawks in the loss to go with six draws and four grounders. McIntosh scored twice to go with two draw controls. Hoxie added the final goal as she also picked up a ground ball.
- Junior Samantha Ciaglo (Colchester, Conn.) led the defensive effort with six ground balls. Junior Courtney Ingham (Bedford, N.H.) and junior Sara Costa (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) each had a caused turnover.
- In net sophomore Mandi Rivard (Vernon, Conn.) stopped 10 shots in the loss.
- For the Brewers Elizabeth Burgess led the way with five goals, while Reilly Mulcahy added six points on four assists and two goals.
