BRISTOL, R.I. - The Hawks women's lacrosse team kicked off Conference of New England (CNE) play on Wednesday night falling to Roger Williams University by a 21-11 score.
Rapid Recap:
- The Roger Williams Hawks took an early 4-0 advantage over the first five minutes, while Hartford did not manage a shot. Sophomore Madison Olmstead (Wolcott, Conn.) stopped the run with a goal with 9:53 to play in the first quarter. RWU got another goal, but the Hawks responded pocketing three-straight goals highlighted by two goals by senior Meghan Smith (Orange, Conn.). RWU would get three more goals in the frame and Hartford would get a fifth goal by Olmstead to convert a hat-trick as the visitors trailed 8-5 after 15 minutes.
- Roger Williams dominated the opening seven minutes of the second quarter extending the lead to 12-5. Sophomore Lauren Samela (Cheshire, Conn.) stopped the run momentarily with a goal from sophomore Laurel McIntosh (West Kingston, R.I.), but the hosts would take momentum back pushing the lead to 14-6. Samela and Olmstead kept Hartford in the game each scoring again as the lead was cut to six headed into halftime.
- RWU got the 15th goal to start the third quarter, but sophomore Talei Ricketson (Centennial, Colo.) answered to keep the Hawks within six. Roger Williams would finish the scoring in the third quarter with two more goals to push the lead to 17-9.
- Junior Sara Costa (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) scored a 10th goal for Hartford with 10:57 to play, but RWU kept pushing getting the lead to 21-10. Olmstead added a final goal with a minute left as the home team won 21-11.
Inside The Numbers:
- Olmstead registered led the offense with seven points on five goals and two assists to go with six draw controls. Smith and Samela each registered two goals. Ricketson added a goal and an assist.
- Freshman Allison O'Donnell (Goshen, N.Y.) led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers and six ground balls. Costa added two causes and a goal.
- Sophomore Mandi Rivard (Vernon, Conn.) picked up the loss making 10 saves. Sophomore Emily Campbell (Plainville, Mass.) finished the game making two saves.
- Mia Pantano led Roger Williams with seven goals, while Allie Shamberger added four goals and two assists.
