WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - On Wednesday, Hartford Volleyball head coach Vinh Nguyen announced that Greg Shell would be joining the coaching staff as an assistant coach.
"I've known Greg since I arrived at Hartford seven years ago when he was coaching at CCSU," said Nguyen. "He knows the game extremely well and is a veteran in the collegiate ranks. His ability to connect with student athletes on and off the court will be a great asset to our program. We are well aligned when it comes to the volleyball side of things. I know that he will hit the ground running."
Shell joins the Hawks with more than 20 years of coaching experience, including a long tenure at Central Connecticut State University where he served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator from 2002 to 2022. During Shell's time with the Blue Devils, he helped guide the program to 12 Northeast Conference Tournament Berths, including being named co-champion in the 2017 Northeast Conference and a trip to the finals in 2019.
In his career he has coached remarkable athletes including four NEC Rookie of the Years, the 2018 Player of the Year, and 2019 Defensive player of the year, while leading 40 more athletes selected All-Northeast Conference. His volleyball teams achieved 15 consecutive AVCA Academic team awards which reflects his commitment to excellence for his student athletes on and off the court.
Shell also served as an assistant coach at Seattle University for a year before returning to CCSU most recently in 2023.
Shell graduated from Central Connecticut State University in 2003 with a BS in Secondary Education.
