Hawks Fall 5-0 to Roger Williams University

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Hartford women's field hockey team battled the Roger Williams Hawks this Saturday for their third Conference of New England (CNE) game of the season. The team fell short with a final score of 5-0, bringing their overall score to 2-5 and in-conference play 0-3.

Rapid Recap:

  • Roger Williams jumped out to an early lead, scoring just over three minutes in when Elizabeth Duquette converted on a penalty corner. RWU's offense maintained pressure throughout the first, firing multiple shots at Hartford keep freshman Carolyn Somers (Worcester, Mass.) who came up with key saves to keep the deficit manageable. Roger Williams added their second tally in the 14th minute when Lexi Yost found the back of the cage, moving into the second quarter with a 2-0 lead over Hartford.
  • Chelsea King from RWU added to their lead when she capitalized on a penalty corner making it 3-0. Hartford's defense held firm the rest of the way, highlighted by a major defensive save by freshman Molly O'Donnell (Holyoke, Mass.) and more key stops by Somers.
  • RWU Hawks dominated possession once again, hammering in shots. Somers stood tall in the cage making save after save to keep Hartford in striking distance. Midway through the third, Katie Flanagan for Roger Williams slipped one past a defender to give the team a comfortable 4-0 advantage to close out the third quarter.
  • Hartford turned to goalkeeper freshman Aubrey Paul (Verona, N.J.) for the final frame, and she was tested early. Paul came up with a string of saves to keep the Hawks in this game, but RWU's pressure proved to be too much. Late in the match it was Emma Sheldon from RWU that sealed the 5-0 for the team to take this conference play win.

Inside the Numbers:

  • The Hawks' keeps combined for 23 saves, Somers recorded 12 saves in 45 minutes of play, while Paul added 10 saves in just 15 minutes of the final quarter.
