Hartford Softball Spits First Series at Space Coast Spring Games

MELBOURNE, Fla. -  The Hartford softball team split the first two games in the sunshine state on Friday to improve their record to 3-1 on the young season. The Hawks defeated Nebraska Wesleyan University by a 10-9 final before falling to Greenville University by a 8-5 final.

Rapid Recap vs Nebraska Wesleyan University (W, 10-9):
  • The Prairie Wolves jumped ahead as two defensive errors and a double put Nebraska Wesleyan University up 3-0. Hartford would answer in the top of the second as senior Taylor Fitch (Andover, Conn.) singled through the right side to score senior Anita Farkash (Seaford, N.Y.). Fitch would later steal second forcing an errant throw to bring home senior Gia Miccio (Bellmore, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to just a single run.
  • The Prairie Wolves would add three more runs on three hits and an error to push the lead to 6-2. The Hawks would battle back yet again in the top of the fourth as sophomore Katrina Baran (Townsend, Del.) started it off with a sacrifice fly to score Miccio. Sophomore Alyssa Edwards (Stoughton, Mass.) would play hero again launching a grand slam over the centerfield fence.
  • The insurance runs would come in the fifth as Fitch would once again deliver doubling down the line to score a pair more. Baran would follow it up with a two RBI single to extend the lead to 10-6. Junior Gracie Hopkins (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) shined in the middle innings not allowing another run until the seventh. Senior Carly Mayhood (Newton, N.J.) would come in relief and get in trouble. Hopkins would come back in and close it out with a great double play by freshman Ariana Hernandez (Fair Lawn, N.J.). Gracie finished it with a punch out.
In the Circle:
  • Hopkins improved to 2-0 on the season tossing all seven innings allowing six runs (two earned) on five hits to go with four strikeouts. Mayhood allowed two runs in the seventh for Hartford.
At The Plate:
  • Fitch led the offense going 2-for-4 with three RBI, a double and two runs scored. Baran added a 2-for-3 game at the plate with a pair of RBIs and a stolen base. Hernandez went 2-for-2 from the plate coming in for a crucial role at second base. Edwards launched the grand slam in a 1-for-4 game.
Post Game Press:
"It was a tough battle but it just showed how much grit this team has when we work all together defensively and offensively", said senior Taylor Fitch (Andover, Conn.). "It was a great way to start our Spring Break."

Rapid Recap vs Greenville University (L, 8-5):
  • The Panthers started fast scoring three runs in the first on three hits. Greenville would add a fourth run in the second as Emma Williams walked, stole second and third before scoring on a single. Edwards would add the first Hawk run in the bottom of the second launching her third homer of the season to right center.
  • The scoring would stop until the fourth as the Panthers would get three more runs on two hits and a defensive error. Hartford would get a run back in the bottom of the inning as Miccio singled to score junior Adelie Beebe (Sacramento, Calif.) who doubled to get on. Greenville would get an eighth run in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly.
  • In the bottom of the seventh the Hawks would try and make a comeback scoring three runs. It started as Beebe once again doubled to score Baran. Edwards and freshman Gillian Ulrich (West Nyack, N.Y.) would both add sacrifice flies, but the Hawks would come up short falling 8-5.
