Hartford Softball Drops Two in Final Double-Header in the Sunshine State

MELBOURNE, Fla. - Hartford softball hit the field Tuesday for its last double header in Florida, dropping game one 8-0 to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and dropping game two 5-3 against Hamilton College.

Rapid Recap vs. University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (L, 8-0)

  • Hartford started off the top of the first, mounting a rally after the pair of outfielders in senior Gia Miccio (Bellmore, N.Y.) and sophomore Katrina Baran (Townsend, Del.) both picked up a single. Blugold pitcher Claire Beck would lock it down on the mound and keep the Hawks from scoring.
  • Wisconsin-Eau Claire captured this momentum, putting together a kill shot rally in the bottom of the second, pushing across a seven-spot and taking a commanding lead. Hartford was not able to help itself in the inning either, committing two errors to aid in the offensive onslaught from the Blugolds.
  • Despite tallying eight hits off Beck, the Hawks' offense was kept off the board, getting shut out for the first time in 27 games. In the bottom of the sixth, Beck helped her own cause, driving a single in to end the game early by the score of 8-0.

In the Circle:

  • Senior Carly Mayhood (Newton, N.J.) took the ball to start the match up, finishing with a final line score of 2.0 innings pitched, five hits, three earned runs, three walks and one strikeout. Sophomore Ella Zobel (Clarence, N.Y.) entered in relief, finishing with 3.2 innings pitched, six hits, one run, one walk, and three punch outs.

At the Plate:

  • Junior Adelie Beebe (Sacramento, Calif.), freshman Alina Weaver (Nazareth, Pa.), and Miccio led the offense for the Hawks, picking up two hits apiece.

Rapid Recap vs. Hamilton College (L, 5-3):

  • The Continentals jumped on the board early, plating two runs in the top of the first courtesy of four hits. In the bottom half, the Hawks were able to answer back, plating their first run of the day on a single by Beebe to score sophomore Eryn Coyle (Monroe, N.Y.). The Hartford rally had legs to be even larger, but the Hawks squandered the opportunity, leaving the bases loaded.
  • Both pitchers settled down in the middle innings, posting three straight scoreless frames in the second, third, and fourth. Similarly to the first inning, Hamilton pushed across two runs in the fifth to run the score up to 4-1. The Hawks, in turn, followed suit by posting a run in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a double from senior Anita Farkash (Seaford, N.Y.). Hartford again had the opportunity to extend the scoring as the bases were loaded for a second time, but were unable to capitalize.
  • In the top of the sixth, the Continentals were able to tack on another run, making the score 5-2 with the Hawks needing a late rally to take home the win. In the bottom of the seventh, the rally was brewing as sophomore Alyssa Edwards (Stoughton, Mass.) sent a shot into left center for a double. After a steal of third by junior pinch runner Sydney Matz (Ellington, Conn.), the Hawks were knocking on the doorstep of a comeback. Farkash kept the rally alive, sending a single into left to score Matz, but despite the effort would be the last one to drive home a run for Hartford, as the Hawks picked up the loss by the score of 5-3.

In the Circle:

  • Junior Gracie Hopkins (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) started game two for the Hawks, posting 4.1 innings of work, allowing 12 hits, four runs, and zero walks. Hartford then turned the ball over to junior Alex Hassett (Granby, Conn.) in relief, and in 2.2 innings, she allowed three hits and only one run while picking up a strikeout to boot.

At the Plate:

  • Farkash led the way for the Hawks, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one walk. Alongside the first baseman, both Baran and Beebe were also able to pick up two hits in the contest.

Up Next:
The Hawks will be back in action up north this Saturday, March 21st, as they open up play in the Conference of New England (CNE) in Milton, Massachusetts, against Curry College. First pitch for game one is set for 12:00 PM.
