NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Hawks women's lacrosse team dropped its second contest of 2026 falling to Smith College by a 16-11 final on Wednesday night.
Rapid Recap:
- Senior Sara Costa (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) kicked off the game for the Hawks scoring the first goal right away, but the Bears would respond with three-straight to lead 3-1. Junior Laurel McIntosh (West Kingston, R.I.) would stop the run for the moment with a goal, but Smith would rattle three more in a row to lead 6-2 with 4:52 to play in the first. McIntosh would score final goal of the period to cut the deficit to three headed into the second.
- The Bears would stay on the gas scoring two quick goals in the first 90 seconds as the lead was up to five. Junior Lauren Samela (Cheshire, Conn.) would kick start a huge Hawk run scoring from a free position, followed by the second in the game for Costa. Junior Katie Graham (Colchester, Conn.) would add two goals to cap off the 4-1 run as Hartford would only trail by two headed into the break.
- Graham would start the third quarter to get herself the hat-trick and more importantly cut the deficit to just one. The defense would pick up in the third with the Hawks causing three turnovers over the 15 minutes. Smith would get their 10th goal of the game with 5:38 to play in the frame, but Samela would respond as the game was 10-9 with the fourth quarter to play.
- Sophomore Kate Zonin (North Smithfield, R.I.) would start the fourth strong with back-to-back goals to give Hartford their first lead since the 1-0 start. The Bears would come alive scoring the next six goals en route to the 16-11 victory.
Inside The Numbers:
- Costa played a great two-way game scoring twice to go with an assist and two caused turnovers. Samela added four points with two goals and two assists. Graham registered a hat-trick, while McIntosh and Zonin each scored twice.
- Senior Shelby Frashure (Pasadena, Md.) caused two of the Hawks nine turnovers to lead the defense with Costa.
- Junior Mandi Rivard (Vernon, Conn.) made fives saves in the loss.
- Kyra Hawk led the Bears with a seven-point performance with five goals and two assists. Caroline Sanders added four points in the win.
