WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - The Hartford Softball team traveled to Eastern Connecticut State on Wednesday afternoon for a double header. The Hawks would fall to the Warriors during the first game 12-0 and take game two home 5-2.
Rapid Recap Game 1 (L 12-0 F/9):
- Senior Carly Mayhood (Newton, N.J.) managed a scoreless first inning, but as the afternoon continued, the Warriors bats had different plans. After an RBI double by Eastern Connecticut State in the second inning, a run of five in the third following a three-run home from Sam Healy blowing the game open.
- Freshman Ariana Hernandez (Fair Lawn, N.J.) and senior Anita Farkash (Seaford, N.Y.) were the only Hawks to solve Elizabeth Mitchell's pitching. Each managing to make contact with the single balls to center. Senior Gia Miccio (Bellmore, N.Y.) would take the plate after a fielder's choice showcasing her speed the Hawks push even when hits were hard to come by; challenging ECS with an almost immediate steel on second base.
- Despite a late walk by senior Taylor Fitch (Andover, CT.) in the fifth inning, the Hawks were unable to create the space to extend the game after the Warriors six-run fourth inning enforced the run rule.
- While the scoreboard didn't favor the Hawks today, the focus shifts immediately to the second game of the day against ECS, as Hartford looks to regain the momentum that saw them enter the week with double-digit wins.
In the Circle:
- Mayhood tossed to 18 batters through three played innings to start off the game. Carly went three innings allowing 10 hits, 8 runs (all earned) and, one strikeout before stepping off the mound.
- Entering from the bullpen junior Alex Hassett (Granby, CT) takes the mound as relief for the fourth inning. Although Eastern Warriors had found their rhythm, Hassett set the mound determined to keep the Hawks in the game. Allowing five hits, four runs (one earned), and no strikeouts.
At the Plate:
- The Hawks offense was led by Hernandez and Farkash, who were the only hitters to make contact with the Warriors pitching. Hernandez put together a composed afternoon, reaching base twice by going 1 for 1 with a walk. Farkash also gained a hit, finishing the day 1 for 2. Fitch, junior Hailey Pruett (Nottingham, N.H.), and sophmore Alyssa Edwards (Stoughton, MA) showed patience at the plate, each a walk to try and spark action for Hartford, while Miccio made the most of her time on base by recording the team's single stolen base of the game.
Rapid Recap Game 2 (W, 5-2):
- Hartford's bats came alive early in the second game of the doubleheader, leading the top of the first with two runs. After Katrina Baran and freshman Demetra Stamboulos (Leonia, N.J.) reached safely, Alyssa Edwards (Clinton, Conn.) cleared home in the game's first run, immediately following an RBI double from Adelie Beebe (Toms River, N.J.). Eastern Connecticut State responded with single runs in the first and second innings to tie the game at 2-2.
- The Hawks reclaimed the lead in the fourth when Gia Miccio (Bellmore, N.Y.) singled a hit to center, driving home Stamboulos. To earn the 5-2 victory and split the series, Hartford added extra runs in the sixth and seventh innings, ended by another Beebe RBI single.
In the Circle:
- Sophomore Ella Zobel (Clarence, N.Y.) took control in the circle, throwing five consecutive scoreless innings to finish the game. Earning her fourth win of the season with a stellar performance. She tossed 7.0 innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out six. After the Warriors tied it in the second, Zobel allowed only one hit over the final five frames to shut the door for the night.
At the Plate:
- With 13 hits, the offense was operating at full capacity. Going 3-for-3 and scoring two runs, Stamboulos was flawless at the plate. Beebe led the team with two RBIs, and Edwards and Beebe both had three-hit performances. Sophomore Katrina Baran (Townsend, Del.) continued acting as a threat, scoring once and reaching base three times.
