Hartford Softball Swept by Western New England University

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Hartford softball team traveled to Springfield on Saturday, falling to Western New England University in both contests to fall to 5-5 in Conference of New England (CNE) play. 

Rapid Recap Game 1 (L, 5-3):

  • The Hawks would jump ahead in the top of the first as freshman Alina Weaver (Nazareth, Pa.) would walk, steal second and later score on a RBI groundout by sophomore Alyssa Edwards (Stoughton, Mass.). The Golden Bears would take the lead in the bottom of the second as Marly Rodriguez launched a two-run homer to take the lead.
  • In the bottom of the third Katelyn Bailey would add some insurance hitting a home run to straight-away center to plate three total runs to get the home team lead to 5-1. In the top of the sixth after a quiet couple of innings, Edwards would get a long ball of her own to cut the deficit to 5-2. In the final inning sophomore Eryn Coyle (Monroe, N.Y.) would single, steal and score on a error by the centerfielder. Hartford would fall in the game as the next two Hawks grounded out. 

In th Circle:

  • Junior Gracie Hopkins (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) picked up the loss, tossing 2.2 innings allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits. Senior Carly Mayhood (Newton, N.J.) would pitch efficiently tossing 3.1 innings allowing just one hit with four strikeouts. 

At the Plate:

  • Edwards went 1-for-4 with both RBIs and a homer. Coyle went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Hartford would only generate five hits in the loss. 
Rapid Recap Game 2 (L, 6-5):
  • Game two started with the home team taking the lead as Katherine Brooks would single home Marly Rodruguez who doubled to start the game. In the top of the third the Hawks would take the lead hitting as Edwards hit a two-run shot to right center. 
  • Sophomore Ella Zobel (Clarence, N.Y.) would pitch well in the early innings, but trouble came in the bottom of the fourth as the Golden Bears would get five runs on four hits with an error to take a 6-2 lead. 
  • In the top of the fifth the Hawks would get two runs back. It started with a sacrifice fly by senior Anita Farkash (Seaford, N.Y.) scoring Edwards. Sophomore Lucy Lembo (Albany, N.Y.) would steal second after being hit by a pitch which helped draw an error from the shortstop to score junior Adelie Beebe (Sacramento, Calif.). In the top of the seventh the Hawks would get one more run on a sacrifice fly by Coyle, but Hartford would fall by the 6-5 final. 

In the Circle:

  • Zobel picked up the loss tossing 5.1 innings allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits with three punch outs. Mayhood got the remaining two outs. 

At the Plate:

  • Edwards went 2-for-4 with another long ball and two runs scored. Beebe and senior Gia Miccio (Bellmore, N.Y.) would both go 2-for-4 with a double and run scored. Coyle added a 1-for-2 day with a double. 

Up Next:
The Hawks will host Nichols College tomorrow with a 12:00 PM doubleheader start time.
