VESTAL, NY ? The University of Hartford softball team wrapped up the 2008 regular season with a 5-1 victory over Binghamton University on Sunday afternoon at East Gym Field.
Hartford ends the season with a winning record (21-20 overall) for the first time since 2002. The Hawks finished 9-12 in conference play.
Sophomore Brittney Stratton earned the victory in the circle, giving up one earned run on five hits while striking out seven. She finished the season with a 16-9 overall record and is tied for second in career wins at the school.
Binghamton scored its only run in the first inning to take a 1-0 advantage. Stratton, however, settled down and gave up only two more hits over the final six innings.
The Hawks took advantage of a Binghamton error to tie the game in the third. Hartford then rallied for a three-run fifth inning to take the lead for good. With runners on first and second, sophomore Rachel Clonick plated a run with a double down the left field line. Classmate Amanda Dilworth followed with a single to bring in the final two runs of the frame.
Hartford added an insurance run in the seventh after junior Amanda Sais reached on an error to start the inning. She then stole second base and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Sophomore Ann Kyzer brought her home with an infield groundout to put the Hawks up 5-1.
Dilworth finished with two of Hartford's four hits in the game. Clonick led the team in batting on the season with a .314 average while Sais recorded a team- and career-high 21 RBI.
