Women's Soccer Battles Stony Brook to Scoreless Draw in AE Conference Opener

BOX SCORE

West Hartford, CT – The University of Hartford women's soccer team opened the America East conference portion of its 2009 on Thursday evening, battling the Stony Brook Seawolves to a stalemate in 110 minutes of scoreless soccer at Al-Marzook Field.

Hartford (4-5-2, 0-0-1 AE) and Stony Brook (2-7-2, AE 1-0-1 AE) struggled to get into a groove on the offensive side of the pitch in the first stanza as just five shots went up between the two teams in the opening 45 minutes. The Hawks notched four shots while the Seawolves only got one ball en route to the goal.

Hartford outshot Stony Brook 11-5 in regulation, with Hartford's best chance to notch the game-winner in coming with just 44 ticks remaining on the scoreboard. Freshman Alex Uscilla fired a shot from 15 yards out from the left, attempting to deposit the ball in the far right corner of the net. The forward's shot was just wide right of the post, sending the game into sudden-victory overtime.

The Hawks and Seawolves were evenly matched throughout the overtime periods, with the Seawolves notching three shots to the Hawks' two. Both teams saw opportunities to score in the final minutes of the second extra period.

With 1:41 remaining on the game clock, Hartford junior Mary Beth Hamilton notched a free-kick from 20 yards out, chipping it over the Stony Brook wall of defenders. Her attempt was just high of the net.

Stony Brook's final look at the back of the net came in the final minute of play. On a free-kick, sophomore Dana Adamkiewicz unloaded a shot straight-on the goal, however the ball was not out of reach of Hartford keeper Lauren Brodeur, who made a diving save to prevent a Stony Brook game-winner.

The Hawks held the advantage in the shots column, outshooting the Seawolves by a margin of 13-8. Hartford also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. In goal, Marisa Viola made four saves for the Seawolves, while Brodeur stopped all three shots she faced to preserve the tie.

The Hawks play the final contest of a three-game home stand as they take on the New Hampshire Wildcats on Sunday, October 4. Sunday's game will be the 28th meeting between the two teams. Last season, the Wildcats defeated the Hawks 1-0 in Concord, NH.
