Hawks Shutout Catamounts on Senior Day at Alumni Stadium

BOX SCORE

West Hartford, CT –
The University of Hartford women's soccer team closed out the 2009 season with a 3-0 shutout of the Vermont Catamounts on Sunday at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium. The Hawks finish 2009 with a 6-10-2 overall record and a 2-5-1 mark in conference play.

Hartford's offense came from three different players, Michele DeSanti, Laura Guigli and Mary Beth Hamilton. Hartford put the first notch in the scoreboard late in the first half, taking a 1-0 margin into the locker room at the break. DeSanti scored the first goal, connecting with Giovanna Velardo for the assist, both the first of the season for the respective player. Velardo made the play happen as she chipped a pass over the head of Breeanna Robinson where DeSanti found herself wide open, sending a hard shot into the upper right corner.

Hartford came out of the break looking to score right away and making it happen in the 48th minute. Guigli, one of three senior to play their final game at Alumni Stadium, connected with DeSanti for the first of two insurance goals. Guigli eluded the Vermont defense as she took the pass from DeSanti. The shot deflected off the finger tips of back-up keeper Alyssa Kelly and then hit off the top of the net for the score.

The Second insurance goal put the game out of reach for the Catamounts in the 85th minute. Hamilton used a pass from Robinson for her third goal of the season. The assist for Robinson gives her 12 points on the season (four goals, four assists), which led the Hawks in 2009. Robinson sent a side-pass to Hamilto who was able to scored in the upper right corner over the reach of Kelly.

The Hawks finished the game outshooting the Catamounts 19-9, including a 12-6 advantage in the final 45 minutes. Hartford keeper Lauren Brodeur finished the game with seven saves, one in the first half and six in the second half, en route to her fifth shutout of the season.

Prior to the game, the Hawks honored their three senior's Guigli, Rachel Richards and Becky Flowers. The three amassed a career record of 31-31-14 over their four-year careers and were an integral part of the Hawks 2006 America East Championship.
