WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - There was a lot to encourage head coach Michael Raymond on Wednesday afternoon, despite the results of the Hartford women's tennis team's match with Fairfield. The Hawks fell to Fairfield in its first home outdoor match of the spring, 7-0. Despite the team's inability to grab a point against one of last year's NCAA Championship-qualifying teams, Raymond saw a lot of positives to be taken away from the day.
"We competed well against yet another team that qualified for last year's NCAA Championships," Raymond explained. "We play a tough schedule and our players are learning on the fly, but we are becoming more competitive every day and I'm seeing great signs of progress."
Sophomore Margaret Sabatino had perhaps the most competitive match of the day, despite being paired up with the reigning MAAC Player of the Year, Paulina Rys. Rys finished off a 6-1, 6-3 victory, but Sabatino's three games won in the second set marked the most for any Hawk in a single set on the day.
Junior Nicole Haynal also had a solid showing, falling 6-2, 6-2 to first-team All-MAAC performer Kristen Liu.
Hartford will next be in action on Saturday morning, when the men's and women's teams travel to Southern Connecticut to take on Sacred Heart. The matches, originally scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Friday, has been moved to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Sacred Heart courts.
