VESTAL, N.Y. – The University of Hartford softball team dropped a doubleheader to the Binghamton Bearcats at East Gym Field on Saturday. The Hawks fell 9-0 in the opening game before seeing a 14-3 defeat in the nightcap. The Bearcats launched 22 hits and combined for 23 wins in the pair of wins.
Hartford falls to 13-15 overall (2-9 America East) while the Bearcats improve to 18-12 with a 5-6 mark in the league.
In the opener, freshman Rhoda Marstellar threw a one-hit shutout, retiring the first nine Hawks she faced in order. Junior Amanda Dilworth was the only Hartford player to make contact through six innings as she squeezed a base hit through the left side to lead off the fourth.
The Bearcats plated four runners in the third inning and cushioned their lead with a pair of runs in the fifth and three notches on the scoreboard in the sixth. Sophomore Siera Sheehan took the loss inside the circle, allowing nine runs – seven earned – on 10 hits through 5.1 innings.
Three Bearcats tallied multi-hit games with Chelsea Horne, the designated player, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and one run.
Hartford got on the scoreboard early using a single off the bat of Nicole Springer that drove in Jessica Oliveira, who reached base on an error to lead off the game. Binghamton snatched the run back however in the bottom of the second and added two more runs in the frame to take a 3-1 lead.
The Hawks scored a pair of runs in the third inning on a single by Olivia Piacentini coupled with an error before Binghamton exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth to build a 14-3 advantage. After the Hawks were held scoreless in the top half of the fifth, the eight run mercy-rule went into effect.
Seven Bearcats tallied at least one hit in the contest helping Kristen Emerling to her 10th win this season. Springer threw 4.0 innings for the Hawks, allowing 14 runs – 11 earned – on 12 hits. The freshman fanned a pair of Bearcats.
Piacentini finished 2-for-2 in the nightcap with a double and an RBI. Springer finished 1-for-2. The rookie scored once and drove in one run.
The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday, April 18 at 11 a.m.
