VESTAL, N.Y. – The University of Hartford softball team fell to the Binghamton Bearcats, 8-7, on a solo walk-off home run by Deannie Plemon in the bottom of the seventh to complete the three-game conference sweep on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Binghamton completes the sweep of Hartford and moves to 6-6 in conference play and 19-12 overall. The Hawks drop to 13-16 with a mark of 2-10 in the America East.
The Hawks jumped out to an early 4-1 lead on three runs in their first at-bats followed by a single run in the second inning. Junior Amanda Dilworth connected for an RBI double and Nicole Springer continued to keep the Hawks' bats hot with a two run homer in the opening frame. A single by Sara Messinger plated Kate Wacyk who singled to lead off the frame for Hartford's only run of the second inning.
The Bearcats got back into the game with a three-run third behind a two-run double by Plemon. Hartford went ahead for the second time of the game at 7-4 after driving in three runs in the fourth using a pair of doubles by Dilworth and Olivia Piacentini.
Back-to-back home runs by Plemon and sophomore Colleen Whitaker knotted the game at seven runs apiece in the bottom of the fifth and Plemon's second long ball of the game in the bottom of the second ended the game with the Bearcats in front at 8-7.
Dilworth went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Hawks. Rookie Springer launched a two run homer. Sophomore Siera Sheehan threw 5.1 innings, allowing seven runs – six earned – on 11 hits. For the Bearcats, Kristen Emerling pitched 3.1 scoreless innings of relief and earned her 11th win of the season.
Hartford returns to action with a doubleheader at in-state rival Sacred Heart on Tuesday, April 20. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
