FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Carter Bender, a midfielder on the University of Hartford men's lacrosse team, was named to the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's All-New England Second Team, as announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Bender finished second on the team in scoring with 34 points on 19 goals and 14 assists. The Caledon, Ontario native concluded the 2010 season riding the longest scoring streak in the America East and 11th best rally in the NCAA. Bender has notched at least one point in every game of his collegiate career dating back to February 21, 2009 against Delaware and has recorded 63 points on 37 goals and 26 assists during the span.
“As a sophomore, to be considered one of the best in New England is a great honor and is very well-deserved,” explained head coach Peter Lawrence. “Every opponent covered Carter with a pole and slid to him early, yet he was still able to produce in every game. Carter is only going to continue to develop and we look forward to him building on this success in the next two years.”
Last week, Bender was one of nine members of the men's lacrosse team that garnered America East postseason awards when he was named to the all-conference second team. The honor was the second of his young career as he was selected to the America East All-Rookie Team at the conclusion of the 2009 season.
Hartford finished 4-10 on the season and concluded America East conference play with a mark of 1-4. The Hawks posted the most wins since the 2003 campaign when they finished 9-8 overall. In addition, Hartford lost six games by two goals or less, including four by a single game. The squad graduates a pair of seniors in the spring and returns all but one starter next season.
