POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist Red Foxes swept a doubleheader from the University of Hartford softball team on Tuesday on Gartland Field in non-conference action. Marist blanked the Hawks, 5-0, in game one and took game two by a final of 8-4.
The twinbill wrapped up non-conference action for the Hawks, who drop to 16-22 overall with the pair of losses. Marist improves to a mark of 8-31 on the season.
Nicole Springer combined for three hits on the afternoon to lead Hartford. The rookie finished with three RBI.
In game one, Emily Osterhaus hurled a six hit shutout en route to her second win of the season. The rookie allowed just eight Hartford base runners and allowed just one Hawk past second base in seven innings.
The Hawks stranded 10 runners on base, including a pair in scoring position in both the second and sixth frames. Hartford had an opportunity to see the scoreboard light up first as Kate Wacyk led off the top half of the second inning with an infield single. After swiping second base, the rookie advanced to third and Rachel Clonick landed on second on a fielding error coupled with a throwing error. The Hawks, however, could not get past third base as Osterhaus retired the next three Hawks in order.
Ashley Corriss provided the first RBI of the game, plating McCallion Campbell, who led off the frame with a single, on a two out single to left center field. Marist scratched two more runs across the plate in the fifth inning as Lindsey Durant and Caitlin Schell each advanced from third to home on a pair of wild pitches with two outs. Durant reached base on a fielder's choice, and Schell followed with a base hit.
Marist cushioned its lead to 5-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kate Malloy opened up the offense on a lead-off single, and after stealing second, she scored on Danielle Koltz's double to left center. After advancing 60-feet to third on a passed ball, Campbell knocked in Koltz on a single ripped down the left field line to push the Red Foxes' lead to 5-0, the eventual final.
In the top of the sixth frame, Nicole Springer and Olivia Piacentini led off with back-to-back singles to left and right field, respectively. The pair advanced to second and third on Wacyk's sacrifice bunt but the Red Foxes' pitcher was able to throw out of the jam as she induced a ground out and a fly out to close out the inning.
Siera Sheehan took the loss inside the circle and falls to 7-11 on the season. The sophomore allowed five earned runs on nine hits, and fanned five Red Foxes in six innings.
In the nightcap, Hartford jumped out to an early 4-0 lead behind one run in the first and three in the third. Following a single run in the second inning, Marist knotted the game and scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the third frame. The Red Foxes held the Hawks scoreless in the remaining five innings and padded their lead to four runs with a three run fifth inning.
Hartford pushed a single run across the scoreboard in its first at-bats as Amanda Dilworth, who doubled with two outs, scored on Springer's double to right center. In the top of the second inning, the Hawks walked the bases loaded to lead offf the frame allowing another walk induced by Shannon Simpkins to score the second run of the game. With the bases juiced, Springer's double plated a pair of runs, pushing the Hawks' lead to 4-0.
Following a single run in the second inning, the Red Foxes put two runs on the board on back-to-back doubles by Malloy and Nicole DiVirgilio, cutting Hartford's lead to 4-3. A single up the middle by Sarah Carmody tallied the fourth RBI of the inning.
A solo shot by Koltz followed by a two-run home run three batters later by Brittany English helped the Red Foxes build a four run advantage at 8-4.
Three pitchers saw action inside the circle in game two, with Woody earning the win and Osterhaus the save. Woody took over in the second inning and threw 3.2 scoreless innings before Osterhaus entered the contest in the fifth frame. She kept the Hawks off the scoreboard in the final two innings and struck out four Hawks. Springer suffered the loss for Hartford, allowing eight earn runs on 10 hits in six innings of work.
The Hawks conclude the 2010 regular season with a three game conference series at Boston University. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is slated for 1:00 p.m. while Sunday's single game is scheduled to begin at 12 noon.
