WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Hosting its home opener on Saturday night, the Hartford men's soccer team could not feed off the energy of a loud and boisterous crowd, as it fell behind quickly and never recovered against Boston University, losing 3-0.
Hartford drops to 0-2-0 overall while the Terriers improve to 1-0-1. The Hawks managed just four shots, with two in the first half and a pair coming in the final stanza. Bojan Delibasic put the only shot on goal for Hartford, which gave up three goals in the first half including one just over a minute into the action.
Before the crowd of 669 had finished sitting down at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium, the Hawks found themselves down 1-0 as Boston University's Aaron O'Neal outran the Hartford defense and knocked one past Hartford goalkeeper Matt McElroy from the right side, giving the Terriers a 1-0 lead just 1:09 into the game.
The Hawks couldn't find an answer, and had trouble pushing the ball deep into Boston territory. The speedy Terriers found themselves in beyond the Hawks defense yet again just over 14 minutes into the game. This time, Stephen Knox saw a cutting O'Neal and dropped a pass into the middle of the box, where O'Neal redirected it into the goal.
Ben Havey scored the final Terriers with help from a perfectly-placed pass from Ade Akinsanya, who sent the ball in from over midfield to the sprinting Havey. The forward outran the Hawks' back line and deked McElroy to the ground before knocking the ball into the back of the net.
Following the halftime break, the Hawks did a much better job controlling the ball, although the Terrier defense continued to stifle them when they reached the 18-yard box. The Hawks fired their third shot of the contest with just over 12 minutes remaining when Patrick Boucher sent one wide from just outside the box. As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Delibasic received a corner kick from Sam Groves and headed it into the arms of Terrier goalkeeper Brandon Briggs for the Hawks' only shot on goal.
Although the Terriers are an America East rival of the Hawks, the game will not count towards either team's conference record. Hartford and Boston University will square off later this season in Boston on October 9 in a contest which will count towards the league standings.
Hartford will look for its first victory of the season again on Tuesday, September 7 when it hosts Nutmeg State rival Quinnipiac at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium. The Hawks and Bobcats will get things underway at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available, and can be purchased by calling 860-768-HAWK or by visiting the Malcolm and Brenda Berman Athletics Box Office at the Reich Family Pavilion. Fans can also purchase tickets at the gate.
