EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford men's and women's tennis programs opened their spring seasons over the weekend, with the men falling to Fairfield 7-0 and the women dropping their match with Rhode Island by the same 7-0 score. The loss drops the men to 3-2 overall this year, while the women fell to 2-3.
The highlight of the weekend came right off the bat on Friday evening, when co-captains
Aneil Bhalla and
Josh Isaacson fought to an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles over Fairfield's Joe Michalisin and Erik Kremheller. It was a big moment for the Hawks, as Michalisin and Kremheller came into the match 12-1 on the season, the only loss coming to a team from Harvard. The Fairfield duo had already won the Fairfield Doubles Invitational and the Connecticut State Championships, tournaments Hartford participated in during the fall season.
Despite the win for Bhalla and Isaacson, the Hawks dropped the other two doubles matches, and went on to come up short in all six singles battles. Bhalla and Fairfield's Dan Sauter engaged in the singles match of the day, with Sauter coming out on top 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, (10-2).
Marco Neves also found himself in a strongly-contested match with Dennis Zlobinsky, falling 4-6, 6-2, (10-2).
On Saturday, the women welcomed Rhode Island into the East Hartford Tennis Club and came away empty handed, falling 7-0. Kaitlin Lennon and Haley Gileau battled but fell at No. 2 doubles, 8-6 to Brooke Hoover and Jenna Williams. Meanwhile, Amanda Epstein had the Hawks' best showing in singles, falling to Michelle Dussol at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-4.
Hartford will return to the courts next weekend, as the men host Bryant on March 4 and the women host Manhattan a day later. The matches will once again take place indoors at the East Hartford Tennis Club. The men get underway at noon and the women will get things started at 6:00 p.m.
