Game Two Box Score
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The University of Hartford softball team was swept by Fairfield University in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Stags (18-13) scored a 7-2 win in the opening game and went on to blank the Hawks (3-23), 8-0, in the afternoon's second game.
SophomoreKate Wacyk doubled and tripled and scored twice in Game One, but it was not enough for the Hawks to overcome the early 3-0 deficit built by the Stags.
Fairfield claimed a 2-0 lead in the first courtesy of four singles. Kristen Filicia and Mikayla Schumate opened the frame with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. Filicia crossed home on a two-out base hit by Allie Wigand and Schumate followed in the next at-bat, scoring on Rae Ball's single.
Fairfield increased its advantage to 3-0 through two before Hartford manufactured its first run and cut the Stags' lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning after Kate Wacyk hit a lead-off triple and came home on a sacrifice fly by Nicole Springer.
The Stags answered and grabbed the tally back in the top of the fifth to regain their three-run lead over the Hawks. The score moved to 4-2 in the top of the sixth as Wacyk and Springer fired back-to-back doubles with one retired in the frame. Fairfield put the game out of reach with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Inside of the circle, Springer was credited with the loss. The sophomore allowed seven runs on 12 hits in 5.2 innings.
In Game Two, junior Emily Orr tossed a five-inning no-hitter as the Stags went on to win 8-0 in the nightcap. The hurler just missed out on a perfect game as the Hawks managed only a second inning walk by Melani Maxwell.
Orr and the Stags got all of the run support it needed when Filicia crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Mikayla Shumate. Filicia reached base on a hit up the middle of the infield, and after stealing second and taking third on a passed ball, the rookie put Fairfield on the scoreboard early.
Fairfield went on to add single runs in the bottom of the third and fourth frames to extend its lead to 3-0 and broke the game open with five more in the bottom of the next inning to earn the 8-0, mercy-rule win.
Rookie pitcher Kaitlyn Meade took the loss in Game Two, allowing four runs – three earned – on four hits in 4.1 innings of work.
The Hawks are in action once again when they head to Marist on Thursday, April 14 for a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
