Softball Scores 4-3 Win in Rubber Match with Stony Brook

BOX SCORE

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – In Sunday's rubber match with America East foe Stony Brook, the University of Hartford went on to score a 4-3 win in the series finale at the University of Hartford Softball Field. The Hawks (5-26, 2-7 AE) return to the field on Wednesday, April 20 with a single game at Quinnipiac (4:30 p.m.).

Stony Brook drops to 13-21 overall on the season with the loss with a mark of 3-9 in league play. For the Hawks, rookie Kaitlyn Meade earned the victory inside of the circle. The hurler scattered seven hits over 6.1 innings, allowing three earned runs while fanning a pair of Seawolves. Four different players collected hits for Hartford with sophomore Jordan Haines collecting a pair of RBIs to lead the way.

Hartford got off to a hot start and dented the scoreboard with four runs in its first at-bats which proved to be all the Hawks would need to score the win in the series finale. Junior Shannon Simpkins was hit by a pitch to lead off the stanza and put the first tally up for the Hawks when Lauren Kamena, a senior, sunk a double into the left field gap.

Kamena advanced 60 more feet to third on a foul out by Kate Wacyk to the opposite side before Nicole Springer, the designated player, delivered a double to left center to score the Hawks' second run on the afternoon. The Hawks doubled their lead at 4-0 when Jordan Haines knocked her second two-run homer of the series over the left center field fence.

Stony Brook managed to get one run back in the second and added a single tally in the fourth before making things interesting in the top of the seventh frame. With one out, third baseman Elise Fortier launched a home run to center field for the Seawolves' third run of the contest. Gina Bianculli was awarded first base after being hit by a pitch and after a Hartford pitching change that saw Springer take control inside of the circle, the second baseman reached scoring position on a two-out single to left field. Springer retired Hawley, however, on a foul out to left field, to preserve the win.
