Sheehan Goes the Distance in Softball's 1-0 Shutout of Quinnipiac

BOX SCORE

HAMDEN, Conn. – Junior Siera Sheehan delivered a strong performance inside of the circle and sophomore Melani Maxwell provided all of the run support that the University of Hartford softball team needed to score a 1-0 defeat of in-state foe Quinnipiac on Wednesday afternoon.

Sheehan scattered six hits and struck out three batters in seven innings en route to her first shutout of the season. The Hawks, who have won three of their last four contests including two in a row, improve to 7-26 on the season. The Bobcats drop to 24-19 with the loss.

The Hartford and Quinnipiac softball programs joined forces to make Wednesday's match-up a Breast Cancer Awareness game. In celebration, both teams wore pink socks and shoe laces and t-shirts were sold at the outing to raise money for cancer awareness.

Neither team could muster up a run through the first two innings until Maxwell got the Hawks on the scoreboard with a lead-off solo home run to left center field in the top half of the third frame.

Sheehan was perfect for Hartford through three innings as she put down the Bobcats' first nine batters in order. Quinnipiac threatened in the fourth as it loaded up the bases on two hits and a walk with zero outs recorded in the frame. Sheehan and the Hawks' defense clamped down, however, as Christy Cabrera, the lead runner, was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice. After Mina Duffy struck out for out number two, Hartford picked off Ristow between third and home for end the stanza without any damage done on the scoreboard.

The Bobcats struck again, this time in the bottom of the seventh as Kesses found herself with a free pass with a one-out walk. With two down in the stanza, she swiped second base and reached third on an infield single off the bat of Lauren Salgado. Sheehan pitched out of the jam however as she forced Cabrera into a ground out to close out the game.

For Quinnipiac, Duffy suffered the loss, her first of the season, allowing one earned run on three hits. She fanned nine batters.

Hartford gets back to work on Thursday, April 21 when it kicks off a five-game homestand by welcoming the South Dakota Coyotes to West Hartford for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 3:00 p.m.
