BOX SCORE
BOSTON - Playing its final dual match of the spring season, the Hartford men's tennis team fell at Boston University on Thursday, 7-0. The defeat left the Hawks with six dual match victories on the year, their most in seven years.
Eric Floum at No. 4 singles and
Joel de los Santos at No. 6 extended their matches to tiebreak sets, but Hartford came up empty in its search for a conference victory.
The Terriers opened play with three convincing victories in doubles to take a quick 1-0 lead. Floum and de los Santos, playing at No. 3 doubles, put up the strongest fight before falling by a 8-3 count. The top two doubles teams for the Hawks both fell 8-1 as Boston University clinched the doubles point.
It would not be long before Boston University had the overall match wrapped up, as the Terriers swept through the top three singles matches in two sets each.
Aneil Bhalla fell at No. 1 singles by a 6-1, 6-1 count, while
Marco Neves was blanked at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0 and
Josh Isaacson dropped his match at No. 3, 6-1, 6-2.
The bottom half of the Hartford ladder proved much more competitive, although they, too, were unable to pry a point away from the Terriers. Playing at No. 4 singles, Floum ceded the first set 6-2 before rebounding for a hard-earned 7-5 victory in the second set. Pushed to a tiebreaker, the Terriers' Jarred Pendleton had all he could handle with Floum before finally emerging with a 10-8 victory in the deciding set.
Meanwhile, at the sixth position, de los Santos jumped on top early when he won the first set, 6-1. Like the match at No. 4, de los Santos found himself locked into a tight battle in the second set, however, and ultimately dropped it to Marcus van Berckel, 7-5. Van Berckel raced out to a 10-1 victory in the tiebreaker to ensure the point.
Bogdan Nedelcu dropped his match at No. 5, 6-3, 6-1.
The men will begin play at the America East Championships on April 29. All matches in that tournament will be played in New Haven, Conn., with a champion crowned on May 1.
