BOX SCORE
HANOVER, N.H. - As was the case on Tuesday against Iona, the Hartford baseball team fell victim to the big inning on Wednesday, as they were defeated at Dartmouth, 7-1. The Big Green scored five runs in the fifth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie on the strengh of two doubles and two triples in the frame.
Brendan Behm had two hits, a double and a triple, and drove in Hartford's only run.
Tyler Corsi took the loss, the fifth in a row for the Hawks.
Dartmouth got on the board first, as Jeff Onstott's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning gave the Big Green a 1-0 lead. In the top of the second,
Jason Freethey drew a one-out walk, then moved up to second on starter Jake Pruner's wild pitch. Two batters later, Behm split the gap in right center, plating Freethey as he glided into second with a double.
Corsi settled down from there, cruising through to the fifth inning without allowing a runner past second base. In the fifth, however, five of the first six Dartmouth batters to come to the plate reached base, with the only out coming on a sacrifice bunt. The Big Green got triples from Joe Sclafani and Jason Brooks to go along with a double off the bat of Chris O'Dowd before Corsi was lifted in favor of
Andrew Mannello.
The freshman Mannello pitched well in his 2.0 innings of work. Brooks scored after Mannello inherited him at third base with one out, but Mannello gave up just one earned run while picking up a strike out.
Kevin Veilleux was also superb out of the bullpen, striking out three and not allowing a run in 1.2 innings of work.
Behm's two-out triple in the top of the ninth inning marked the only time after Dartmouth took the lead that the Hawks could push a runner past second base. He was stranded there when the game ended.
The Hawks will be back on the diamond on Saturday, when they host Albany for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. Hartford and Albany will play a single game on Sunday to conclude their three-game series at Fiondella Field. Tickets for all three games are still available, and can be purchased by calling 860-768-HAWK or by visiting the Malcolm and Brenda Berman Athletics Box Office.
