Baltimore, Md. – The University of Hartford softball team dropped the final contest of a three-game set with the UMBC Retrievers by a 4-0 final on Sunday afternoon. UMBC (25-21, 8-10 AE) completed the weekend sweep of Hartford (7-33, 2-13 AE) with the win.
Fox five and a half innings, the Hawks and Retrievers exchanged zeroes on the scoreboard before UMBC ignited for four runs in the bottom of the sixth frame to clinch the win. The Hawks collected four hits, including lead off singles in the first three frames, but could not manage to score a run on UMBC hurler Stephanie Weigman. Sophomore Melani Maxwell doubled in the seventh inning to lead the Hawks.
With a pair of runners in scoring position and one out in the bottom of the sixth, UMBC cashed in a costly miscue by centerfielder Shannon Simpkins that scored both runners and placed Angela Yannone on second. breaking the 0-0 deadlock. The Retrievers followed suit and doubled their lead in the next at-bat as Katie Ferguson sent a long ball over the centerfield wall to give the home team its 4-0 advantage.
Kaitlyn Meade took the loss inside of the circle but did not allow an earned run on seven hits. Weigman scattered five hits while striking out four in the shutout.
The Hawks wrap-up the home portion of the 2011 schedule with three contests held at the University of Hartford softball field. Hartford hosts CCSU in a single game on Wed., May 4 (4:00 p.m.) before taking on Holy Cross in a doubleheader on Thurs., May 5 (3:00 p.m.). Lauren Kamena, the lone member of the Hawks' senior class, will be honored prior to the start of Thursday's doubleheader in a Senior Day ceremony.
