Smith, Lantz Among Top-25 at 2011 New England Amateur Championship

82nd New England Amateur Championship Final Results

WEST HARTFORD, CONN. -
Rising senior Matt Smith continued his excellent play over the summer as part of a trio of Hawks that represented Hartford at the 2011 New England Amateur Golf Championship held earlier this week at the Metacomet Country Club in Rhode Island.

Smith was one of two Hawks to make the cut for the final two rounds of the annual championship. Joining him in the final field was 2011 graduate D.J. Lantz. Smith finished the weekend in a three way tie for 14th place overall firing a 72-hole 284 over the three-day event. Lantz finished in 25th place overall with a four-round 290.

Smith's total score of 284 was four-strokes over par for the Championship and 17-strokes behind the individual champion Jeff Hedden from Old Lyme, Conn. Smith's best round of the week came in the second round where he finished even par 70, after opening the tournament with a two-over par 72 in the first round. He then closed out the tournament with back-to-back 71's.

Lantz's low round of the three-day event came in the first round after the cut when he finished one-over par 71. Also representing the Hawks was rising junior Brendan Meagher who failed to make the cut and finished 146th overall with a two-round score of 168.

Smith's performance in Rhode Island is one of many impressive feats over the summer as he earned runner-up distinction at the Connecticut Amateur Championship, and set a new course record and won the course championship at his home course of Quinnatisset earlier in July.
