Mary Beth Hamilton Keeps Hawks Unbeaten with Late Goal in 1-0 Shutout of LIU

BOX SCORE

Brooklyn, N.Y. – Fifth-year women's soccer player Mary Beth Hamilton scored off a Long Island turnover deep in the Hawks territory with just under three minutes remaining in the game, lifting the Hawks to a 1-0 victory over the Blackbirds on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks remain unbeaten in 2011 with a 5-0-1 overall record, while Long Island falls to 2-4 overall.

Hamilton took advantage of Long Island's Kayleigh Moran late in the game as Morgan was attempting to clear the ball out of the Blackbirds end of the field when Hamilton stole it away and flew in towards LIU keeper Jennifer Bannon, unleashing a quick shot and securing the victory before sending the match to extra time.

LIU had a pair of chances following the Hawks goal, the first coming on a corner kick that the hawks defended well, not allowing a shot on goal. The second came on a long cross into the box, however Hawks keeper Erin Quinlan leapt through traffic and pulled the ball into her grasp, securing her fourth shutout of the season.

Quinlan has now gone more than 469 minutes without allowing a goal, in the meantime snatching up 22 total saves, including six against the Blackbirds. Her 22 total saves amounts to an impressive .957 save percentage, while the one goal allowed in six games leads to a tremendous 0.17  goals-against average.

Overall for the match, the Hawks were outshot by Long Island 12-8, including a 7-3 advantage for the home team in the first 45 minutes of action. Of the Hawks eight shots, two forced Brannon into action as she finished with a single save in each half. Leading the attack for the Hawks were juniors Amélia Pereira and Caroline Dixon who finished with three and two shots, respectively.

The Hawks will play their next two games at Marist as part of the Red Foxes tournament. The Hawks will not play the host team, but will face Lafayette (Friday at 4:30 p.m.) and Cornell (Sunday at 12:00 p.m.). The Hawks will then return to West Hartford for their final tune-up before opening conference play. The Hawks next home game welcomes another in-state rival, Fairfield, to Alumni Stadium on September 21 at 7:00 p.m.
