POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The University of Hartford women's soccer team scored its third-straight shutout with a 1-0 win over Lafayette in the first game of the Marist Tournament. The Hawks lone goal came from junior Amélia Pereira, her third of the season, in the 53rd minute. The Hawks will play Cornell on Sunday in the final game at Marist at 12:00 p.m.
The Hawks improve to 6-0-1, posting their best start since under head coach John Natale and the program's best start to a season since the 1995 campaign. Lafayette drops to 4-2-0 on the season.
Despite a scoreless first half, the Hawks dominated play in the opening 45 with five shot attempts compared to just two by the Leopards. In the opening minutes of action, Pereira and Arielle Aikens saw back-to-back chances at putting the first tally on the scoreboard of the match however both of their attempts were turned away by Lafatyette keeper Lauren Smedley.
Just seven minutes out of the halftime intermission, the Hawks found the back of the net for what proved to be the eventual game winning tally. At the 52:29 mark, Aikens launched a cross from the right wing, finding Pereira who finished from 12-yards out and put Hartford ahead, 1-0.
Following the first tally of the match, Lafayette saw two chances to even the score, the first inthe 68th minute nad the second in the 78th, but Hawks' keeper Erin Quinlan rejected both attempts to keep the Leopards off of the scoreboard and seal the clean slate in favor of Hartford.
Hartford dominated the Leopards offensively, outshooting their counterparts by a margin of 14-8 while holding a 2-1 edge in corner kicks in the match.
Sophomore transfer Quinlan was forced to make four saves in the contest to lead the keeper to her fifth shutout this season. The Saugus, Mass. native has not allowed more than one goal in 612 total minutes and has kept her opponents scoreless in 550 minutes. Her counterpart, Smedley, recorded three saves in the match.
