TEANECK, N.J. – The University of Hartford women's soccer team maintained its unbeaten record in as it put down the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights by a 2-0 final on Friday afternoon. The Hawks, who return to the pitch for their home opener on Sunday, September 4 at 2:00 p.m. against Temple, move to 2-0-1 on the young season while the Knights drop to 0-1-1 overall.
Appearing in her first game following a week-long stint overseas with the Portuguese National Team, junior Amelia Pereira sank a penalty kick for her first score of the 2011 season to put the Hawks on the scoreboard in the 25th minute. Senior Caitlin Alves followed suit when she delivered her second tally of 2011 in the 80th minute to add an insurance mark on the scoreboard in favor of the visitors.
Hartford came out of the gates in full steam, bombarding the Knights' defense with 14 first half shot attempts while holding its opponents to just three looks in the opening stanza. After nine Hartford shots, the Hawks put their first notch on the scoreboard in the 25th minute. At the 24:38 mark, Fairleigh Dickinson was flagged for a foul inside of the box, setting the stage for a Hartford penalty kick which was drilled past Knights' keeper Sage Dovale by Pereira.
Following more than 55 scoreless minutes, Alves hooked up with Pereira to double the Hawks' lead to 2-0 and secure the win. Pereira lofted a cross from the left which Alves tracked down and beat the keeper with her shot from 12 yards out.
In the full 90 minutes, the Hawks combined to outshoot their counterparts, 19-8, and dominated the battle of the corner kicks by a margin of 10-2. In goal, sophomore transfer Erin Quinlan rejected three shots en route to her second win - and second shutout - of the season. Dovale recorded six saves in the match.
