BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Hartford women's soccer team dropped its second straight match in league play, falling on the road to the Vermont Catamounts by a 2-0 final. The Hawks fall to 9-4-3 overall and 5-2-0. Despite the loss, Hartford locked up the #1 seed heading into the America East Championship. The Hawks will receive a bye in the first round and host a semifinal game on Sunday, October 28 at 2:00 p.m.
Hartford finished the match with a 15-11 advantage in shots, including an 11-7 lead in the second half alone. Vermont keeper Ally Ramos finished with a game-best eight saves to secure the shutout. Seven of her saves came in the second half. Hartford keeper Erin Quinlan finished with four saves, three in the first half and one in the second. Hartford also led the corner kick battle with a 3-2 advantage.
After playing the first 45 minutes scoreless, the Catamounts broke the stalemate in the 66th minute scoring on a direct kick just outside the top of the 18-yard box. Haley Marks blasted the free kick past the Hawks wall and out of reach of a diving Quinlan. Marks shot, which resulted in her first goal of the season, found the upper right corner for the game-winner.
Vermont struck again, this time on a penalty kick awarded in the 77th minute. Bre Pletnik, who entered the game as the Catamounts leading scorer with five goals, went right on Quinlan who was unable to dive in time allowing the second goal of the contest
The Hawks will close out the 2012 regular season on Sunday when they travel to Stony Brook for a date with the Seawolves. Hartford and Stony Brook are scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start at LaValle Stadium.
