WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford men's soccer team played a hard-fought match against Albany at Alumni Stadium, but it was the Great Danes who reached the scoreboard first, striking with just 121 seconds remaining in the final overtime period to score the 1-0 victory at Alumni Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Hawks conclude the 2012 campaign at 7-9-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the America East. With the win, Albany moves on to the postseason as the fourth seed in the America East Championship and will host New Hampshire in the opening round next weekend.
Quintel Gates provided the heroics for the Great Danes in the 108th minute, scoring after a series of touch passes from Philip Persson and Anthony Rozzano. Gates put the finishing touches on the breakaway after beating Hartford keeper Viltsu Tuumi with a low shot to the far post.
The home team exploited Albany's defense early and often, but was unable to sneak one past Albany netminder Tim Allen, who finished the match with a game-high five saves. Hartford held the upper hand in both corner kicks (10-2) and shots (13-5), including a commanding 10-3 advantage in regulation.
Hartford, which combined for three shots in extra time, saw its best look at netting the game-winner come midway through the first overtime. One minute after a newly inserted sophomore Patrick Hallahan sent a shot just wide of the mark, junior Anthony Santaga got his head on a ball from three yards out, but missed just wide of the far post.
Saturday night marked the final game for a pair of Hartford seniors who have left their mark on the men's soccer program during their tenure in a Hawks' uniform. In their four-year careers, Kevin Lewis and Stamopoulos helped lead Hartford to a pair of America East Tournament appearances, including last year's championship match at Stony Brook, which marked the program's first trip to the conference title game since 1999.
