Abby Liu won her third straight singles match, defeating Bryant's Claudia Hidalgo in the top spot for the Hartford women Saturday on the road at Bryant. The women's team dropped its match against to the Bulldogs, 6-1, while the men's team, also facing Bryant, lost by a final score of 7-0.
Liu led the Hawk women, picking up the Hawks only point for the third straight match. The Houston, Texas-native took the first set of her No. 1 singles match, 7-5, before dispatching Hidalgo, 6-2, in the second set to seal the victory. Liu improves to 3-1 in singles play this Spring. A transfer from the University of Texas, Liu has amassed a 14-3 singles record as a Hawk, including a 5-2 mark in dual-match play.
In doubles play, Liu teamed with sophomore
Ashley Harel at the No. 1 position. The pair dropped an 8-4 decision to Bryant's top tandem of Stephanie Smyers and Lucy Bird.
On the men's side, sophomore
Michael Kennelly played well out of the No. 3 singles slot, pushing Bryant's Ernesto Arguello to a pair of tiebreaks. Arguello took the win in a 7-6(9), 7-6(3) match. Kennelly moved up to the No. 3 position for the first time this Spring after playing in the No. 4 spot for the past three matches.
In doubles play, the Hawks No. 1 duo of
Marco Neves and
Josh Isaacson also forced a tiebreak before eventually falling to Bryant's Zach Morris and Peter Callahn, 9-8(7).
Both Hawk squads are off until the final week of March. The women return to the court to host Marist in West Hartford on March 28 while the men are on the road at Fairfield March 29 and at Hofstra March 30.
