VESTAL, N.Y. – The University of Hartford softball team led early in Sunday's series finale at Binghamton, however the Hawks would not go the distance as the Bearcats came back to score a 13-5 victory at the East Gym Field in America East action. Binghamton (12-14, 3-3 AE) completed the sweep of Hartford (4-22, 0-6), which returns to action on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Iona starting at 2:30 p.m.
Sophomore
Amber Andrews and junior
Kate Wacyk each homered in the contest to lead the Hawks. Andrews finished 2-for-3, driving in a pair of runs while scoring twice, and Wacyk tallied three RBIs and scored once in the outing.
Hartford trailed 1-0 but took a 4-1 lead in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Andrews followed by a two-out, three-run shot by junior Wacyk.
Jordan Haines led off that frame with a base hit and with one down,
Erica Phelps laid down a bunt single to advance her teammate, allowing the Hawks' first run of the game to score on a single by Andrews. One batter later, Wacyk slammed one over the outfield fence to provide Hartford with the 4-1 advantage.
The Bearcats clawed back in the bottom of that frame with a pair of runs. Mikala King, who singled home a run in her at-bat, crossed home plate two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Bump to make it a one-run disadvantage for Binghamton at 4-3.
In the next inning, a two-run homer by Caitlyn Friis reclaimed the lead for the Bearcats at 5-4 and the home team pushed ahead by two runs as King roped a double down the right field line, plating Tucker who singled after the two-run shot.
Hartford managed to trim that deficit to one-run at 6-5 in the top of the fifth inning when Andrews connected for a one-out, solo home run to right field.
In the top of the sixth, the Hawks juiced up the bases with zero outs in the stanza but could not push any runs across home plate as Binghamton pitcher Kristen Emerling clamped down and retired the next three batters.
Chelsey Mooney earned a walk to start that inning, and back-to-back singles by Melanie Maxwell and
Margaret Betz occupied all of the bags.
Devynne Butler, who pinch-ran for Mooney, however was forced out at home plate on a fielder's choice in Haines' at-bat and the next two Hartford batters were induced into pop-outs to end the inning.
Binghamton clung on to that 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, and rattled off seven runs to close off the game. Friis got the frame going with a double and scored in the next at-bat on a two-bagger by Jessica Phillips. She would then score on a wild pitch out of the hand of
Kaitlyn Meade.
The Bearcats then loaded up the bases on a pair of walks, allowing four runs to score on Bump's grand slam to center field. One batter later, Chelsey Locatell hit ahome run over the fence of right field to secure the win in walk-off fashion.
Siera Sheehan suffered the loss for the Hawks and drops to 4-4 on the season while Demi Laney improves her record to 4-4 with the win.
