WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford men's and women's tennis teams wrapped up their weekends with losses at home against visiting St. Francis (Pa.) Sunday. The Hawk men dropped a 4-3 decision to the Terriers while the women fell, 5-2.
The losses Sunday came after both the men and women fell by identical 6-1 scores in Saturday matches with the men taking a loss at home to America East foe Boston University and the women losing on the road to Connecticut.
Against St. Francis (Pa.) on Sunday, the Hawk men earned victories at the Nos. 1, 2 and 4 positions but fell short in the final score, 4-3. In the top spot for the Hawks, junior
Marco Neves jumped out to a lead with a 6-4 victory in the first set against Nate Fleming. Fleming tied the match with a 6-1 win in the second set. However, Neves pulled out the victory, taking the third and final set, 7-5.
Senior
Aneil Bhalla had an easier time in his match at No. 2, winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Sophomore
Michael Kennelly also picked up a straight-set win, dispatching Lawson Barter at No. 4, 7-5, 6-4.
Junior
Bogdan Nedelcu had a chance to pick up a deciding fourth point for the Hawks. Nedelcu won a tiebreaker in the first set to take a one-set advantage, 7-6 (10). However, his opponent at No. 6 singles came back to win the next two sets and earn the victory in the match.
On Saturday, Bhalla picked up the lone point for the Hawks with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Boston University's Jesse Frieder. After his singles victory Sunday, Bhalla's win streak at the No. 2 singles slot stands at six matches.
In women's action, Hartford fell, 5-2 to St. Francis (Pa.) on Sunday and 6-1 to UConn on Saturday. Graduate student
Abby Liu paced the Hawks for the weekend, winning both her No. 1 singles matches. Saturday, Liu earned the Hawks only point against the Huskies, topping UConn's Jen Learmonth, 6-2, 6-1. Liu followed that with a shutout win against St. Francis (Pa.) top player Devynn Sarver, 6-0, 6-0. Liu has now picked up victories in each of her last four matches at No. 1 singles.
Ashley Harel also picked up a point for the Hawks Sunday. Harel breezed past Nuria Valls, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles post, notching her first singles victory of the Spring.
In doubles play against the Terriers, the tandem of
Haley Gileau and
Christie Greenberg picked up a win at the No. 3 position, 9-7. However, the Terriers pulled out the doubles point with victories at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions.
